Hi everyone,,,,after 2 1/2 days of waiting and bursting with anxiety attacks finally Wednesday afternoon I called the hospital and begged someone to tell me my pet scan results. I knew the surgeon had to of read them. About a half hour later a nurse calls me back to tell me everything looks NORMAL. Thank GOD... I immediately took a deep breath and looked up to the sky and thanked the man upstairs. This was Wednesday and I was prepping for my procedure on Thursday. The whole Fleet thing and no solids. We all know how fun that is. Anyway, now I was concerned about the thing they saw in my rectum and why that didn't show up in the Pet Scan. I wondered what they would do now.
I was scheduled for outpatient surgery on Thursday morning. I went in yesterday and the surgeon still did the surgery and removed what he called a small nodule. I still don't understand why this wouldn't have showed up on the Pet scan. He removed it and will biopsy it and I was told to call the hospital on Monday. I am relived in one sense and still scared at the results from this one. Please keep me in your prayers. D ~ Who is sitting here with one sore bum.

A PET scan shows CELLULAR activity, so if the polyp or growth or whatever it is isn't cancerous, it wouldn't show up on the PET scan. A CT scan, on the other hand, shows ORGAN function, and so a polyp or mass would probably show up on that, whether it was malignant or not. I THINK. If anyone knows better, they can chime in.

    Ahoy, Doreen -

I think HisJoy is probably right on the mark regarding PET versus CT scans. A PET scan is essentially radioactive sugar that cancer cells gobble up - if there are no cancer cells gobbling, there will be no imagery of the nodule since there isn't any cancer. Understand that that is an oversimplification of the process, but I don'ty think you need to worry too much.

Keeping you in my prayers anyway -

    Cheers
