I would like your opinions

At our two local comprehensive cancer centers, there is a woman who runs a store in each that sells primarily cancer victim related items like head coverings, wigs, decorative pink ribbon wear, mastectomy bras, etc. She sells some costume jewelry also and some clothing, but, her focus is for the cancer patient and their needs.

Here is my question. She runs this totally for profit, with nothing being donated for cancer research or victims...and she is a breast cancer survivor.

For some reason, it bothers me. I think that most ppl who go in there just assume that a percentage goes to help in some way, but, it does not. If she would even increase the cost by 5% to make a donation toward something, I would feel better about buying the products. I prefer to buy online from the sites that do help in the fight.

Am I wrong for that? I see it as making money from us, taking advatage of the situation. She has gotten the contracts for the space in the centers and partly because of being a survivor. I want her to make lots of money and thrive, it is not about that, I just find it offensive.

    Both the cancer centers and the woman are running businesses. The cancer center does not donate space to the woman. She rents it, and the cancer centers collect $$$$. If you prefer, shop where a percentage of revenue goes toward an organization, which of course is also a business. Some people may not have access to a computer, so the shops could be an enormous benefit to them when chemo or radiation drain strength.

    My honest opinion is that this woman is providing a service by running this business. Unless the prices are out of line, she probably isn't getting rich off sick people. Being a cancer survivor herself, she knows her clientele. If you don't feel comfortable shopping there, shop elsewhere, but don't harbor negative feelings. She may be doing volunteer work for cancer patients or organizations on her own.

    I found a shop in the town where I live and was very happy it was available. I have no clue if this lady is a cancer survivor or donates money to the cancer society. She makes her shop available once a month for cancer survivors to meet. I can't tell you how much I appreciated her spending 2 hours with me one day just trying on wigs, hats and scarfs. She made me laugh and I tell you I will never forget that. I think there is such a need for these kinds of shops. The lady your talking about is giving back because she has walked the walk and does understand what it is like to have cancer. She also has a right to make a living, why not that!

    Thank you for your feedback. I needed that I guess. She does make available things that are only available through her. I like the lady who owns it, but not everyone that works there. And, some of the things are really overpriced. But, you guys are right. Thank you for helping me with that. I am ALL about making a living. That was not what I was questioning at all. But, my thinking was not focused, and it is probably partly due to some circumstances that have arisen there which gave me pause, and honestly, the lady who owns it was not the issue. So, with that said, thanks guys for giving me the benefit of your insight. Sometimes it is hard to see the trees in the middle of the forest. (I really am not a nasty, hard hearted mean person.. ;0)
