Nutrition as a means to forestall cancer reoccurance

Last July I was diagnosed with metaplastic carcinoma. During two surgeries Doc's removed a 9cm tumor from my chest wall and found scattered cancer cells in four of 16 lymph nodes. I just completed chemo and radiation and I am doing well, with the exception of crying jags which are gradually getting better. I've benefited so much from reading these posts- thanks to you all. I have about three months before I will return to work (a very stressful job which I love but am scared to death to go back to). I am seeking some control over my life, after the last nine months of having none. To that end, I have been attempting to research ways I can improve my diet and excercise options. I have had very little luck in finding nutritional changes I can make. So much of what I've seen on the Internet is quackery and the clinic (Mayo)where I've been treated offers exceptionally little outside of a standard nutruition class. I know there has been research concerning ties between nutrition and cancer, excercise and cancer etc. Is there a program, book or even anectodal experiences you all could share concerning how I might live differently as means to forestall a reoccurrance of this cancer? Thanks. Maureen

There is no money in telling us how to eat correctly. There are many books on eating to stay cancer free, do any of these work? It is hard to say, these people who write these books are alive. All of them are about the same, no meat, no dairy, no sugar, no refined food, no fats. This of course leaves you with grains, vegetables and fruits. Some say limit fruits, some say eat raw foods organic only. The books and information are there but nothing is really proven. Some of us go to ND Drs and continue with our regular MDs. A lot of us take vitamins and other supplements. All of us are afraid, all of us turn to differnet things for support. God is a good place to start and stay. Linda

That's a real good book and it comes with a CD. Another good book is Patient Heal Thyself. As stated earlier, they all say about the same thing, the hard part is sticking to the diet!
    God bless you! hummingbyrd

    Hello,

I also recommend "Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by Patrick Quillin. Good nutrition does make a difference. It may not be a cure, but it helps your body fight and it helps you stay strong. I don't eat refined sugars or processed foods anymore. I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. I also take supplements and drink protein shakes. It was a big change for me. It took several weeks to get used to it. Each week I would try to make improvements, it didn't happen over night. Even though I am in remission now, I still follow it. Some of the cancer treatment centers such as Sloan-Ketterling, MD Anderson, and Moffitt offer information/research on supplements. I posted the web addresses below.

    Best wishes & God Bless,

Thanks so much. It's such a new world in so many ways for us. I come from a career where I traveled extensively and ate and drank pretty much whatever looked great on the menu. I never learned to cook well and didn't really have an interest. Now, I am paying attention to these things and I often wonder if all those preservatives/sugared doughnuts and proccessed hor dourves did me in. I think I may try your approach and phase in these changes. I am glad to hear you are in remission- I do back to my Doc later in the month for my first check up since finishing treatment. I am soooo tired, but no other symptoms. Can you recommend any supplements? I will also check out the books and websites. Thanks again!

Hi Maureen. For the other side of the coin, I have found that little daily pleasures mean so much now. Butter pecan ice cream? You bet. I won't be eating a whole 1/2 gallon, but I have decided to not deny myself comforts when the jury is still out on whether food can contribute or hinder our present conditions. I say go get your self a bag of peanut m&ms and don't share!!
    ((hugs))
