Subcutaneous mastectomy

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of subcutaneous mastectomy? This is something I was considering as a preventive measure with the hopes of retaining sensitivity in the breast. I'm using the TRAM flap to reconstruct the one side and I'm trying to decide what, if anything, to do on the unaffected side. The plastic surgeon I saw this week though says it's not likely considering most of the nerves run throughout the breast tissue, which would be removed. I know the doctors don't like to use this method to prevent breast cancer since some breast tissue is left behind, but I thought it could provide me with a compromise of some added protection while at the same time retaining feeling. Just wondering if anyone else had looked at it.

Susan, I have no answer, but since there are no replys yet, just a note of encouragement to hang in there. God bless, jhope

Hi jhope. Thanks for the encouragement. I did have someone email me directly (thank you Linda!) and from all the info I've gathered, I have decided not to do anything to the remaining breast. I've set it up with my surgeon and GYN so that I have a breast exam every 3 mos. (not including the exams I'll have at the onc.) and a mamo every 6 mos. I am also planning on becoming an expert at self exam. I have been looking at all my options for quite a while and feel confident and comfortable with the decision I've come to. Thanks for the response. Hope all is well with you.
