I just finished with my treatments of chemo and radiation. I was told that I could have my port removed now or wait for a period of time. I am curious as to what others have done - remove it right away or after a year or so...just in case.

I had my port removed at the same time I did my bilateral mastectomy -- 4 weeks after the completion of chemo. I hated my port.
If you keep it, I read that you need to get it flushed on a regular basis.

I had my port removed one month after I finished my chemo treatments. The oncology doctor had to write my surgeon a note saying it was ok to remove it at that time. It made me feel a lot better after it was out. I was concerned about it coming out because they do it in the office, but there was no pain for me. The area was sore for a couple days after it was removed. That was Jan 22, 2004.

I asked my oncologist what I needed to do and he said I could get it out so I scheduled an appointment with my surgeon. My friend in SC was told that she was not going to have it removed for 2 years due to her stage and cancer situation so my suggestion is have a serious conversation with your doctor based on YOUR cancer situation. Blessings on you - C

I finished up in October and I had my port out in February. I hated it.. it was always sore and I too -- kept it for a few months ... JUST in case--it is best to have it out for it can cause problems...Good luck and God Bless
