Could someone please tell me how I can care for my scalp. I have not totally lost my hair but know it is going to happen. Is there anything speial I should do? I was told to purchase a wig which I have done. Is there anything I should wear underneath the wig? I was told there may be alot of itching and I should use a product, but do not know what product. Ladies I need your advise. Let me thank you all for being there for me and getting me through a bad time in our lives.

Hey Terri, you should have a "head sock" for under your wig. Also, keep your scalp lotioned well. Find a really good one like Neutragena. Also if you can use body oil in the shower, and after you shower use on your head frequently this will keep it from peeling and itching. When at home if you are not to self concious, keep the damn wig off. You are beautiful!!!!!!! Other than that, just moistruize, moisturize, moisturize. Good luck!!!!!! This too shall pass, and your hair will grow back soon!!!

I don't know where you live, if it's not cold, going bald could be an option. When my hair started falling out I just shaved my head. Wore baseball caps (color coordinated to whatever I wore that day)most of the summer and fall. Actually I enjoyed the freedom from hair. Used my moisturizer(Oil of Olay) on my head since it also had sun screen in it. Right now my hair is coming back. It's about 1/2 long and pure white. I don't think I'll ever go back to hair that requires combing, brushing, mousse, gels, hairdryers, permanents and curlers. I do know I found shaving all my hair off this time, made me feel better than I did the first time. When I first got breast cancer in 97 with chemo in 98, I just tried to maintain some kind of style as it fell out. It was more depressing ( I looked like I had mange) This time, shaving it off, made me feel proactive, that I was saying something to others. It was my banner.

Terry, I lost my hair in the summer and just washed and conditioned my scalp like I had hair. However, wintertime may have required more care.
Since the wig seemed tight, I wore cotton headbands under my wig. I didn't wear the wig caps because I was too hot.

My chemo nurse told me that I should continue to use the same shampoo I used before I lost my hair. She told me that your body does not take change well when going through chemo. I used a dab of shampoo and never had any scalp problems.

I decided before I lost my hair that would not wear a wig. I wore different turban type covers and scarfs. I would strongly advise getting a SOFT cap to sleep in, especially in the winter. Even if you are normally warm, you will get cold at night with your head exposed.

    Dear Terry:

Right now go and get a bottle of Aveeno Bbaby wash this wil lhelp to keep the scalp soft while the chemo is in your system it also hleps your hair com back in thicker than it was. I dod it and my hair is almost 40 inches long now my husband is flipping over it. Let me know how you handle it if you try it,

    Terri,
I was bald in the winter, but never wore anything under my wig. I washed and conditioned my head every morning in the shower just like I did when I had hair and my head didn't itch or get dry until my hair started growing back in. I took my wig off when I got home from work and wore a fleece hat at home and also to bed at night. It helps keep you warm when you sleep. I had such chills at night I would just shake, but never had a fever. I get excited when I see a cancer patient's hair growing back. I know what it means to them. And it will grow back! Been there, know how you feel.

    Kelly,

Thank you for answering my question. I have tried the Aveeno and it is great. Really does make my scalp feel so much better. I have had my head shaved and now wearing scrafs, hats and a wig. I live in a cold climate so really do need something on my head. Well again I like to thank everyone who answered my question. I am so thankful I found this site and have gotten to know you all. May God Bless all of us.
