Hi all, i finished my Mammosite radiation about two weeks ago. Had lumpectomy 5 days before radiation. I was on an antibiotic for nine days after surgery. Then all of a sudden this past Sat. i had alot of blood in my urine, it only lasted one day. I saw the dr, on Monday and he did urinalysis, no infection. He was not sure why blood in urine, he said he did culture. Anyway, he put me on antibiotic anyway, just in case. I have had 3-4 UTI's in less than a year. I can't begin to tell you how worried I am. What test should I request? Should I request test? Dr. said if blood comes back after antibiotic, then he will do tests. I'm not sure i want to wait that long. What do you think? Am I being paranoid? Having just recently been diagnosed with cancer, i'm worried. Laura

    Laura,

I don't know what you should do, but I remember having my first UTI after BC. I had never had one in my life and one day at work I started not to feel well and knew I was probably getting one. By 2am that night, I was urinating nothing but blood. That really scared me - I thought of all kinds of horrible things it could be. You are not being paranoid, it is a common reaction after what we have just been through. Take a deep breath. If you see more blood or experience back pain or have a high fever, call your doctor at once. But if you are really concerned, ask your doctor again and tell him your fears. If he can't satisfy them, call someone else. I don't know where you live, but many cities have a nurses hotline you can call or a number that gives you referral to other doctors. Maybe they can help you find one that will address your concerns better or even a specialist that can ease your mind. I am not in the medical field, so I can't really give advice, just "mom" talk. I didn't want you to think that no one cared, I'm just sure no one has read your post that has experienced the same problem yet. Take care and let us know how everything turns out.

    God Bless,
    Kathy

Hey Laura, could be lots of things besides 'you know'. Unless you've had a hysterectomy it may not have been your urine. May not have been a full blown period, but certainly could have been what they call 'break through bleeding'. That can be short periods of bleeding even on tamoxifen. I would ask my doc for a CMP... Comprehensive Metabolic Profile. That will check your kidney function, sodium, potassium, etc. You also might want to consider the possibility that you passed a stone. Usually those are painful, but there are exceptions. One other blood test I would ask for is a CBC. It will tell you what your white count is doing and if you are anemic. Breast cancer usually goes to brain, bone, liver and lung. That may not sound like good news, but point is kidney is not typical area to metastasis too. Hope this helps. I know how hard it is to not worry but that is one thing that doesn't do anything for us. You must of heard about how the cold virus doesn't attach itself to happy people. I think there is allot to be said for that. Worry only adds more stress on an already stressful situation. I am sorry you have so much going on but the care of good doctors is all we have. I sort of stumbled my way through it all trying not to get excited about anything let alone everything.
I can only tell you how much I have learned about the "Art of Breathing". It is what we get out of each and every breath that can make a difference in the life we lead. I have been athlete my whole life yet I can honestly say I am in better shape now than I was then. Sometimes my life is as simple of as breathing, one breath at a time let alone moving one step forward at a time. Simplicity has changed everything about me. For I am responsible for everything I do and I am the only one who complicates things for I am human. One has to understand what it is they have control over and what they do not. Once that is established then anything is possible. I have proved myself wrong many times in my life and still continue to.
Being good to ourselves instead of always reminding ourselves of what we could of done differently is one of the easiest things we can do yet most of have failed at it through the years.
    Love to all,
    Tara

Hummingbird, thanks for the information. I did have a partial hysterectomy 13 years ago, so it can't be that. I will ask for the bloodwork that you mentioned. I knew that "you know" usually doesn't go to the bladder, kidney, but you know what it's like, everythign scares you. thanks for the support. Laura
