Just wanted to thank everyone on this board for sharing their information and offering their wonderful support to each other. I've learned so much from everyone, from how to cope, to what questions I need to ask my oncologist. Recently I had a dexa scan (having read about it here) and found out that I have osteoporosis at 42! I'm wondering about the Rebecca Study for preventing osteoporosis in bc patients that someone mentioned on this board. Does anyone know how I can find out more about this? Thanks, Mary Beth

    Hi Mary Beth,

I've had to take medication for several years now for osteoporosis due to tamoxifen. One of the side effects of tamoxifen in premenopausal women is that it softens the bones. As for the Rebecca Study, ask smvargo (Stephanie) I know she told me she is trying to get in the study. But also ask your oncologist. I would think the oncologist should be on top of this. Hope this helps.

    God Bless,
    Kathy

    Mar,
I still haven't gotten a phone call back about participating in the study. As soon as I do, I will post the info. My onc. in Pittsburgh at Magee Women's Hospital is participating in the study. He has worked in the past with other patients in other geographic areas who wanted to participate in trials and studies by recruiting their individual onc.s to coordinate with him in Pittsburgh. Hopefully, I'll have more info. soon.
I was Dx. as osteoporatic at 42 also.

Small world, I had my lumpectomy at Magee Hosp., Dr. Kelley was my surgeon. Saw Dr. Stanley Marks, an oncologist, for a 2nd opinion there too. I live in Lincoln, Nebraska, but have family in Pgh. Thanks Kathy and Stephanie for your helpful info, I'll watch for your post.

PS. Just did a search. The medication being used in the Rebecca study is Actonel.
