African-Americans out there, please advise me of some of the side-effects you have had during and after being treated with breast cancer. My skin developed rashes, my nail turned dark and brittle

I am not African American but I too had spots that showed up on me all over. I asked my doctor about these spots and he said they were normal. They almost looked liked freckles. My nails were terrible as well. I now take pride in them and go every two weeks to get them done. Last chemo was April. Take care - Cammie

While Im not African American, I can relate to the side effects you mention. I dont know what type chemo you are on, but I had A/C combo when lost hair, and then was given cytoxin and 5FU which was very hard on the nails and skin. I actually lost a toenail and my skin was really red and bumpy for while, it even still is -sort of- and my last treatment was 10 months ago.I have found a cream from mary kay that seems to be helping. Good Luck and God Bless,

Hi, I am a 48 year old African American who had a double mastectomy, reconstructive surgery (implants) in July 2002 and 4 rounds of chemo (A/C) last treatment in October of 2002. The only side effects that I can remember right now from the chemo were dry and itchy eyes, my finger and toe nails turned black but not brittle, my tongue turned black. I can't remember anything (I've heard it call chemobrain), I did not have any kinds of rashes or anything.

I do hope that all is getting better for you.

I remember when I was going through all the treatments for breast cancer, I thought it would never be over. But I'm here to tell you it gets better, little by little. I felt so hopeless while I was going through my treatment. But I made it through. I'm not the same person I was before the surgery ( I see my life in such a different light), but I'm making it (I'm still visiting with a psychologist weekly - helping me sort out stuff).

Also this site is full of women with experience willing to share. Everything may not work for you, but it gives you something to think about.

It's wonderful to be able to be in contact with people that have truly travelled the same road you are on. It's nothing like having someone tell you "I know what you mean, I know how you feel" and truly know that they actually "know what you mean and know how you feel"

If there is anything that you think I can share with you, don't hesitate to contact me. ljpayne1014@cs.com

    Take good care of yourself.
