Old Timer check in...
It's been a long time so I am poking my head in to say stage IV survival is possible.
I was diagnosed with colon cancer 15 years ago at the age of 39. I had liver mets and ovary mets and two colon surgeries. With a total of 4 surgeries including HIPEC and a year and half of chemo in a five year time period.
My youngest who was 11 is getting married. Kids are all grown up and my oldest is married with two lovely grandkids.
It is possible. I'm now 54!
Get educated. Ask for wisdom. Have HOPE!

You give me so much hope. My husband was recently diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer and our oncologist will not consider HIPEC only because there are a couple of minuscule pulmonary nodules showing on his CT that cannot even be diagnosed as mets. I feel that HIPEC is his best chance for longer survival. Did you start with systemic chemo or have the HIPEC first? We may need to seek another opinion.

Thank you for posting this.
I am 3 weeks post op for my colon resection. They are sending me for genetic counseling, because I am 43. I am scared of the genetic results. I worry that I will die of this and my 12 year old will grow up without me.
It always helps me to read survivors stories. Thank you for sharing yours!

Hi, yours is a great survivor story to share, with the spread, multiple surgeries and treatments. We share a similar time frame, but I didn't talk here for 5+ years, though I was diagnosed a month after you in 9/07. I only read folks stories/messages until 2013, so I can't recall if we ever conversed. Anyway, yours is an inspiring tale, and I'm glad you came by, and shared it here, Jen...............................Dave

Such an inspiration! My husband is just beginning this journey, but we are finding resistance to any consideration for surgery in the future (he did have the primary tumor resected). Our oncologist is hyperfocused on palliative chemo only. We need a second opinion but don't know where to go. Any insight is very appreciated.

Just reading this provides so much hope. My husband was diagnosed with Stage IV Colorectal cancer three days before Christmas, with liver mets. He completed surgery January 10th to remove most of his colon, part of his rectum, part of his liver, and 28 lymph nodes (13 of which came back cancerous). We have a 10 year old daughter and this has been the most unexpected and terrifying whirlwind. Searching the internet has not been my friend- this is the first place I have come and found solace in a minefield of survival rates and scary statistics. Thank you for sharing your story. It means more than you could know.

I highly recommend getting second and third opinions! Docs do their very best but remember that a chemo doc treats so many different kinds of cancer. Surgical options come from the people who do them best, surgeons.

I have a question for all the long time survivors. We're any of you diagnosed with a BRAF mutation? My son's oncologist tells us that he would never be able to have surgery (lung) or never go NED is because of this mutation.
