Stem cell treatment

in Lymphoma (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin) #1

Hi, 

i have diffuse large b-cell lymphoma.   I have had 6 rounds of r-chop.    After pet scan showed it's still there I received rice treatment (2 rounds of rice chemo).   Last year doctor  recommendied stem cell transplant but I didn't want to do it.  because I declined the stem cell transplant doctor put me on maintenance chemo which is Rituxan.   i received three rounds of Rituxan.   It did not help, the pet scan shows it came back.   So now I took two rounds of rice chemo in preparation for stem cell transplant.  I'm reluctant to go through with it because I'm 73 years old with 1 fully functioning kidney.   Otherwise I'm in perfect health.   I'm wondering if anyone is in this same situation.  I'd appreciate other opinions.

    I got it at 68

    Hello Uma1,

    I got primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) in 2012 at the age of 68. I got cortisone, then 3 four day rounds of chemo, then high dose chemo and autologous stem cell transplant. Then cancer was gone away even before the high dose chemo. My stomach was then bad for 2-3 months, and I was weak for about 6 months. Now I am fit and strong. The only remaining problem is a little neuropathy, a very slight numbness of my feet. Life is good to me.

    Sadly, when we search out others with identical or even similar conditions, we find that we may be the only person that fits those criteria. You would most likely have to undergo a mini transplant, or at most a moderate intensity transplant. But, with a single kidney having to oxidize the massive amounts of chemo that are used in transplant preparation as well as post-transplant immune chemo and immune suppression, I don't know...that is a really tough question.

    I would definitely consult with another transplant center first.
