Turn for the worse

I received a phone call from the prison hospital today telling me I could come and visit as soon as I could get there. The reason for the "special visit" was that my husband wasn't do as good today as yesterday. When I arrived, no one seemed able to tell me what was going on, but my husband is now on oxygen and his breathing is very irregular. Additionally, he seemed to be in a lot of pain and his can't control his bowels. When they turned him over to change his depend, he moaned with pain in his hip. The few times he woke up to say anything, he told me he had fell. There's no one to talk to on the weekends at the prison hospital facility. So, all I can do is hope everything will be okay and that I don't get a phone call in the middle of the night.

    This just doesn't seem right
Your husband should not be in so much pain, and there should be records for you to look through! Is there somebody you could call, like the prison director or something - somebody who might actually DO something if you made a little noise about it?

    It's not right!!!
Unfortunatley not. I called to see how he was doing and was told they couldn't give me any information. I then told them my husband had signed a medical release form which is in his chart giving permission to discuss his condition with me. I was still told there was no one this late at night who could give me information and I needed to call back in the morning at 8:00 a.m. Therefore; I told the young lady I wanted to share some information. I told her when I was there for an emergency visit with my husband earlier that he was taking his oxygen off of his face and when he did he would gasp for breath. She said I needed to call back in the morning at 8:00 a.m. This really made me mad! I said you mean to tell me I have to wait until 8:00 a.m. to tell someone my husband may be gasping for air since there is not monitors in the room and there is not a nurse there this late at night for you to pass the information along to. She replied by saying "Maam, I can't give you any information." By now, I was livid! She finally transferred me to the Shift Commander, who put me on hold and came back to the phone stating there had been no change. I informed the commander about the oxygen and she said she would pass the information to the nurse supervisor. Inmates are human beings too. How would these people feel if it were there mother, father, sister, brother, etc. in a similar situation? It just isn't right!

    Contact your Congressman!
Contact your Congressman! This is pathetic. Write it all down so that you have something for them to look over at the congressman's office if you go in. Your congressman should also have an email address that you can write to today. There are a host of other organizations who specialize in prisoner rights which you can look up on this website: http://criminal.findlaw.com Good luck.

    Sad situation
I've been following your story like probably hundreds are. I want to respond but don't really have any idea what to say. The congressman idea sounds great. I can hear it now. " call back or I'll put you on hold or something else that will completely piss you off. Find out if it's possible to get him to another proper hospital. How can a prison hospital be equipped to handle a cancer patient with a case like his? This is disturbing...I've seen patients in jump suits and shackles being brought to hospitals for treatment. It should be done. Call your senator, your congressman, Hell, call the president. This is making me mad now.

    Bad situation getting worse
I was granted another special visit with my husband today. While visiting there were several things I witnessed and/or noticed. One, the call button is not within his reach. Two, because of the fact he has been incontenant all day when telling the nurse he wanted to go to the bathroom, her reply was she will have to ask someone if he could. Just because he had been incontinant didn't mean he was at that moment. He knew he felt like he wanted to go to the bathroom. He smelled of urine as if he had not had a bath. He kept telling me to get the urinal over by the trashcan and wash it out. He said that's all I want is it washed out; I smell urine and they just dump it and don't wash it out. Of course, what he was smelling was him self. By the time the nurse came with a bed pan, she said it's too late; we're going to have to clean him up. We (his visitors)were asked to step out of the room while they changed him. There is a glass in the door to see into the room. My daughter watched as they tugged and pulled on him to get him changed; looking at the pain on his face and hearing the moans and groans coming from inside the room. Her eyes filled with tears as her spirit was enraged with anger. They were hurting him from a fall he had taken a couple of days ago and hurt hip. X-rays still have not been taken to see if he fractured or broke anything. On the way out we asked the guard who was escorting us what can be done about getting the x-rays. We were told the person we need to speak with is only there during the week. So, once again, I inquired of how emergency medical needs are handled on the weekend. I was told he didn't know, but he would speak with the nursing supervisor on the next shift to check into it. I have ran into a dead end because it is the weekend on every aspect of trying to get my husband proper medical attention. I will fight this to the end! He deserves better than this!!!!

    Contacting the Governor
I have exhalted all other avenues trying to get something done. I intend to call the Governor's Office tomorrow. I live in Nashville where the Governor's Office is located. My husband's doctor called me today to ask if my husband has a living will and what my decisions are as it relates to the Advanced Medical Directive. I informed the doctor he is supposed to have his Advanced Medical Directive in his chart and his wishes are to do everything medically possible to save his life. I asked the doctor if he would write a letter to back up the request for the medical furlough because the doctors at the hospital wouldn't write the letter because in their opionon he may improve. The doctor I spoke with said he didn't know why they told me that because my husband is very sick and his life expectancy isn't good. He also advisied me I may want to reconsider the directive and talk it over with my husband. He said I may not want to put him through the trauma of recessutation. I am getting another emergency visit with him today due to the circumstances. It's not a good day.

My wish is that you can get him to Vanderbilt as long as you're in Nashville.
Maybe a trial treatment, some kind of care. God be with you.

I have finally got a bit of good news. I was told today, I can get a 30 day authorization for bedside visits. I tried to contact the individual today who sets it up. At least if I get this authorized, I can see him everyday to check on him myself. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a day for accomplishments.

I want to thank everyone for all the support in my situation. It really means a lot to me.

    God Bless!
