MY dad is starting chemo this week. I have read somewhere that it is more effective and even tolerable if you fast 48 hrs prior to the treatment. has anybody fasted b4 their treatment. if you have, has it benefitted in any way?
PS: How are you doing pepe? Praying for all of you! never loose hope and faith!

    In my opinion......
Fasting may only help to make him feel worse than he will...I think it would be best to let him eat what he can to retain his strength for most likely he won't feel like eating on his week after treatment...Only my opinion though....Love and Hope , Buzz

    Body stresses before chemo
My mom'd doc told her that the days approaching chemo should be spent ensuring that she is strong. Well fed and well hydrated. Making big changes during treatment can actually stress the body and make the side effects worse. We were told no huge changes til after treatment.

    Ummm
Never heard of that. George had an oatmeal breakfast today, we went to the chemo lab around noon, and during chemo he had a turkey sandwich, a cookie, and a bottle of water. I would tend to think fasting would make you somewhat sick and you need to eat and be hydrated in the event you don't feel so well after chemo.

    Take care - Tina

    Gosh, he can't really eat
Gosh, he can't really eat or feel like eating during chemo, he would just waste away...

    Fasting
My doctor told me to eat to keep your body as strong as possible. Like Nana said you don't want to waste away to nothing. Plus keeping the immune system as strong as possible through proper nutrition is very critical.

I haven't heard of this before. When I went to the chemo class before I started chemo they said to have a light meal before chemo, that it helps with nausea. I have noticed the days where I haven't had much to drink or eat beforehand, I feel more nauseated during + after chemo.

    I eat during Chemo
I usually eat during chemo. My onc encourages it with menus from 20 local resturants. I am seven out of twelve FolFox treatments. When I feel really horible I eat bananas and gatoraid. They seem to make feel comfortable.

Do what works best for him!
    Best Always, mike

    Why weaken the body?
Why would you want to weaken the body before having chemo which weakens the body?
Sounds like a recipe for not having your body at it's fittest when you need it the most.
Keep your father well hydrated and well fed, would be my advice.

I only came up with this on the internet. a web page from "scientific american" by Valter Longo, a U.S.C. gerontologist and co-author of the new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA:
    http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=fasting-may-bolster-healt

just wondered if this had been put into practice by any of you. im just clutching at straws here guys. i also read about complimentary treatment to chemo in the way of "hyperthermia therapy" sounds promising too.

    Gabrielle............
Clutching at Straws......"A desperate person will try anything to save himself, no matter how unlikely. The proverb has been traced back to 'Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation' by Thomas More (1478-1535).

First off Gabrielle, your father will be ok, there is an internal thought process that teaches us to expect the worse, and that thought process is hard to cast aside. Especially when we are the caregivers to someone we love very much. First see how he feels and try to simulate his feelings so that he feels comfortable knowing you are ok with "his " illness. Most likely he will feel worse just by not being able to make you feel better. Its a daddy/daughter thing, don't make me try and explain it, its just there so accept it..LOL...Clutching at straws simply indicates your love for him, how lucky he is to have that love from you and he knows it too, you better believe that, he surely does. His treatment will go a lot better for all if he knows that you are ok with whats going on, and we all know we never like it but to soothe the feeling that he may have you need to be ok as well with the position he is in right now. Then he as I know that if our little girls are ok then so are we...and its one less thing we have to worry about...Its a win for both dad and daughter.............we all share in the love of our families, sometimes we have to get past the hurt to help with the healing.......Love, Patience, and Eternal calm with you and your dad.............Clift

I always try to eat well prior to chemo
I sort of view it as the last good meal for a couple days.

Getting maximum nutricion i thought was important. not heard of the study before.

Doing quite well Gabrielle ,all tests for the moment fairy good
I thank God!. I wouldn't suggest fasting, I would say even the opposite ! It's going to be hard to him to get some weight while on chemo
so don't miss any chance to eat while he is on chemo!.
    Besos!
Por cierto, ya sabes en que hospital están tratandole?

You have to be careful while
You have to be careful while in treatment. Every new thing that is introduced by the way of fiet and excercise needs to be discussed with the onc. Y mom's onc wanted my mom not to introduce over the counter vitamins unless she spoke to him first. Prolonged coughing and regular colds should be discussed with the onc. Regular things that a healthy person would take for granted need attention with a person undergoing treatment for cancer. Subtle changes can have the potential to really really impact their level of comfort, which can impact their recovery.
