Hello I am new to this network. I am 30 years old and this is my second round of cancer. I first had cancer in my appendix and now two years later it has appeared below my kidney. I guess I am unsure of whether it is considered a colorectal cancer or a kidney cancer.Having surgery on Thursday to have a bowel resection and possible removal of my whole kidney. I am not sure what to expect, has anyone experienced any of these surgerys before? Thank you for any advice.

    Welcome
Sorry to hear that you are in the battle again. I have had the resection surgery, mine was a full open incsion resection with a temporary illeostomy. What kind of surgery are you having? If you give more specifics, those that have experience it can chime in and be a great support for you!

I am having an open surgery
I am having an open surgery it is a bowel resection but I am not sure how much exactly. The problem is that they really are not going to know what they are doing until they get in there. They cannot tell if the tumor is growing into my kidney or if it is just pushing up into it. The tumor is coming from below my kidney. They think it seeded there from the cancer I had in my appendix when it burst. I just know I am having the bowel resection and possibly a partical or complete kidney removal. It is scary not knowing, I won't know what they did until I wake up from the surgery. I do know it is going to be an open surgery they are going in through my old incision.

    Sorry
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Not sure of what type of surgery you would be having regarding the bowel resection vs. kidney. Hoping that all goes well for you and you are welcome to post here anytime. Please let us know how you are doing.

    Best Wishes!
Our prayers and thoughts are with you!

I have only had the colon resection. (My cancer started in my appendix and then into my colon, and then colon and small intestine.) The colon resection hurts for the first 5-8 days. After that I felt better and better. Walk, walk, walk. It will be uncomfortable at first. I took a lot of short trips at first. Then I was doing laps around the entire hospital floor, then around all the floors. Walking gets rid of the cramps after surgery.

You will feel starved for the first day. After that the hunger pains go away. You will not have food for 3-4 days after surgery. Figure 7-8 days in the hospital. They tell you different but all three stays were for 8 days for me.

    Best Always! mike

Thank you so much for the encouragement and giving me a better idea of what I may be facing. They did tell me they thought I would be in the hospital for about a week. Thank you again.

Thank you for the support. I wish I knew more of what was exactly happening tomorrow, a lot of it depends on what they see when they get in there. I know I am having an open surgery and the bowel resection is a definate, not sure yet if the whole kidney will be removed or not. I was wondering what to expect from the bowel resection but I think that Mike has given me a good idea of that. Thanks again for your support.

Yes, what he said. Keep up
Yes, what he said. Keep up on the walking at home too. I did eat in the hospital, no NG for me, but it was clear liquids till things started moving and happening. When you get home, I hope you have help. It will be painful at first, the first week getting up is the worst. Then you will notice little improvements each day. Take your pain meds if you need them. I took the Vicodin at first but was on the non narcotics soon and they helped just fine. Let us know when you're back if you don't have a laptop. Or you can let someone in your family get on here for you with questions and updates. We like to know. It will be ok, just take some time.

    Take care, Gail
