International Range of Cancer Incidence

Although cancer occurs in every country in the world, there are wide geographic variations in incidence. The rates presented are from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5), Volume VI (Parkin, 1992). The rates are age-adjusted to the world standard. Because many countries do not have national incidence rates, or have rates only for specific regions, there are fewer countries represented in the incidence data than in the mortality data. The tables show the wide range of incidence for selected cancer sites for males and females separately. The country/geographic area with the highest rate is shown together with the rate and the specific ethnic or racial group in which it occurred, if noted. Similarly, the lowest rates are given, as well as a ratio of the highest to the lowest.

For males, incidence rates for all sites combined ranged from 493.8 per 100,000 in Tasmania, Australia, to a low of 59.1 in The Gambia. Rates for U.S. males were 351.3 for blacks (SEER) and 330.4 for whites (SEER).

The largest ratios of the highest rates to the lowest rates in worldwide cancer incidence among males were for melanoma of the skin, nasopharynx, and larynx, with ratios of 289, 285, and 204, respectively. For melanoma of the skin, the area reporting the highest rate was the Australian Capital Territory with 28.9 per 100,000; the lowest rate, 0.1, was reported among Kuwaitis in Kuwait and among persons in Khon Kaen, Thailand. For nasopharynx, the highest rate was 28.5 in Hong Kong while the lowest was 0.1 for Quito, Ecuador. For larynx, the highest rate was 20.4 in Basque Country, Spain, and the lowest rate, 0.1, was for men in Qidong, China.

The worldwide range in lung cancer incidence among men ranges from a high of 119.1 in New Zealand Maoris to 1.0 per 100,000 in The Gambia. U.S. black men in New Orleans experienced a lung cancer rate of 115.9, just lower than that for Maoris in New Zealand. Prostate cancer rates were highest for black men in Atlanta, Georgia (102.0) and lowest in Qidong, China (0.8 per 100,000).

Cancer has been around since the beginning of time, and long
before all the "carcinogenic" products we have today. Anything,
and nothing, can cause a cell to begin living on it's own inside us.

As our good cells divide, 1/2 dies and is usually discarded by our
immune system. If that dying cell begins surviving by the fermentation
process, it is called "cancer".

For many people, their immune system does the job of preventing
a dying or dead cell from continuing to stay alive, and for may of
us...... our immune system has ignored the dead or dying cell.

Chemo and radiation can kill cancer cells when they are large enough
to be identified, but not without side effects. Newer technology is
attempting to use devices to identify cancer cells in an earlier stage.

But there is no argument regarding the absolute best way to kill
cancer cells if a true cure is to take place, and that is to have our own
immune system do the job.

No science is perfect, and no cure for cancer has been found,
but ways to enhance the immune system to help it do it's job,
is available and has been for thousands of years.

If it will work for someone, can only be realized by the use of it,
not by speculation.

Don't let the fear of dying keep you from living. If one science
is failing you, seek out another to try.

It is never too late; there is no prognosis too bad to deny yourself
the possibility to live.

I truly wish all cancer victims the ability to live on in good health.

There -are- options.

    What type of immune

    Hi John

What type of immune boosters do you take?? I've read so much about this lately and am curios what you think works. I take a ton of stuff from my naturopath...I feel great, so am going to keep on taking. Also have acupuncture and shaitsu massage on a regular basis. That serves as my meditation that I just can't seem to tackle.
Love to see what others are doing that seems to be working for them.

    Thanks John!
    Sue, I follow these steps

    http://www.womenfitness.net/immune-system.htm

op10 Towards Building a Strong Immune System

Our immune systems are being challenged more than ever. The modern lifestyle is, let's just say, not very healthy. We have some of the poorest eating habits on the planet, we're stressed out, and our environmental pollution is growing on a daily basis. It's no wonder we're seeing more and more allergies, recurrent colds and flus, Chronic Fatigue, environmental sensitivity, etc., etc. Be it under-active or overactive, immune system dysfunction is on the rise.

There are many ways to enhance the immune system:

Eating a well balanced diet is critical for a properly functioning immune system.

A diet high in fruits and vegetables has many of the phytonutrient critical to enhance immunity as well as many of the important vitamins and minerals. A steady and balanced intake of essential vitamins and mineral helps to keep our immune systems working properly by providing us protection from infections and disease. Fish, poultry, lean meat, low-fat dairy products, cereals and legumes (peas, lentils, beans) are all good sources of minerals. Foods such as cheese, eggs or liver, which supply vitamin A, and spinach, sweet potatoes or carrots, which are good sources of beta carotene, should also be eaten daily.

    EAT PLENTY OF
    Protein-rich foods
    Citrus fruits for vitamin C
    Vegetable oils for vitamin E
Spinach, sweet potatoes and carrots which supply beta carotene
    CUT DOWN ON
Animal fats, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and
    Highly processed carbohydrates.

Plenty of rest- Body needs rest from the stress and strain of daily life to get recharged. We depend on adequate restful sleep to restore our bodies and refresh our minds. During deep sleep, our bodies release potent immune-enhancing substances that strengthen immune function. It is especially important to get additional rest when we are ill. Women generally tend to ignore this aspect of good health due to heavy demands placed upon them both at place of work and at home. The result becomes obvious through signs of extreme exhaustion, irritability, panic and tantrums.

Exercise program- A regular exercise program of low-to-high intensity workout for 25-30 most days of the week is recommended to build a strong immune system. We all know how invigorated and strong we feel when we're in shape. Overall fitness creates reserve capacity that not only serves as a buffer against disease but also helps us recover more quickly.

Drink 6-8 glasses of water per day. Body fluids, made up mostly of water, bring to each system all the ingredients and carry away the body’s waste in form of urine. Water is also necessary for many chemical reactions in the body. It can act as a lubricant around joints and protect sensitive tissues and organs, including the spinal cord, eyes, and the amniotic sac in pregnancy from shock. It is absolutely essential to stay well hydrated throughout the day. (Click here to read more)

Increase your vitamin C intake to 1000-2000 mg/d (this may reduce your histamine levels): a moderately large amounts of this vitamin (up to 200mg daily) increase levels of immunoglobulin - blood proteins that ac as disease fighting antibodies - which are produced by the immune system. Vitamin D (obtained from oily fish) and vitamin E (in olive oil, nuts, avocados and wholegrain cereals are also vital to the immune system's effectiveness, as are essential fatty acids found in vegetable oils and fish oils.

One of the most common nutrient deficiencies which affects the immune system is a lack of zinc. Pumpkin seeds and lean beef are both a rich source of zinc, while oysters are an excellent source. A recent study among elderly people showed that a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement improved their immune responses. Be sure that you are taking magnesium (400 mg/day). Magnesium is involved in transmission of nerve impulses within the body. Food sources are legumes, grains, dark green vegetables, and nuts.

Avoid excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine which might interfere in the normal functioning of various body processes.

Protect yourself from ingestion or inhalation of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and mercury; and tobacco smoke or other forms of pollution in the air. When pollutants or toxic substances are absorbed by the body, they threaten the effectiveness of the minerals and vitamins in food, and are sometimes described as ant nutrients. Clearing the body of these environmental toxins increases our requirement for antioxidants and various other nutrients. Because of these exposures, our nutritional requirements may be increased to higher levels than we can obtain in our diet, making it important to use nutritional supplements to remain healthy. And because of the prevalence of these exposures, it's also important to build detoxification into our lifestyle.

A committee of the World Health Organization reported that up to 30 percent of new and remodeled buildings emit air pollutants such as formaldehyde, asbestos, volatile chemicals, and other toxins and allergens. The effects of these emissions can cause "sick-building syndrome."

The stress factor. There is a strong data that documents the impact of stress on immunity and susceptibility to illness. A report of 276 volunteers exposed to a common cold virus showed that those who had been under stress for more than a month were most likely to get sick. In another study, children with a history of stress and recurrent colds were found to have lower localized immunity. Stress has also been found to stimulate immune-suppressing chemicals such as adrenaline. Fortunately, research has found that stress reducers such as meditation, relaxation, guided imagery, and hypnosis can effectively enhance immunity

A report of 276 volunteers exposed to a common cold virus showed that those who had been under stress for more than a month were most likely to get sick.

We need a steady and balanced intake of essential vitamins and mineral to keep our immune systems working properly to provide protection from infections and disease. However, an immune system that is overactive may cause deterioration in people who are suffering form disorders such as ARTHRITIS and MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS.

The list of herbs I took, is *here*

I do not, and will not, claim they helped fight my cancer; I'll let
the proponents of chemo and radiation make claims like that.

Some people can do nothing after cancer surgery and live long
lives, while others can do everything and die of the complications
of cancer. There are no guarantees with any science.

The only claim I'll make, is that I did not have to suffer the consequences
of western medicine, and that I am here in spite of a lousy prognosis.

(If anyone plans on using any herbs of this type, a doctor of TCM or
a qualified herbalist is required to insure your safety. They are all
medicinal strength herbs and can be hazardous if not taken properly.)

If you read the list, you'll see that they not only are "claimed" to attack
cancer cells specifically, but help build the immune system.

Just last week we bought a used "Champion" juicer from a guy on
"craigslist". I'm the type of guy that eats a lot of fat, grease, and other
great delicacies, and no (0) vegetables or fruit. It's a wonder my
body can fight a cold, let alone cancer.. So I figured that drinking
a 4 to 6 oz cup of what I wouldn't ordinarily eat, might be the
way to get some stuff into me that hasn't been there in maybe
50 years (My wife made me stop putting White Castle burgers
in the juicer, but it doesn't taste all that bad without them anyway).

I would strongly recommend juicing, if for no other reason than
it's a bout the best way to get the needed nutrients, vitamins, and
enzymes into your system, without having to eat a bushel of veggies
a day. It's amazing how many different vegetables and fruits you
can drink in a 6 oz cup! All fresh and not processed like canned
and bottled junk. It costs little, and the benefits are great.

    As far as TCM?

There are no guarantees with anything. Chemo works and can work well
for many, as well as radiation, in many circumstances.

Phil has had great results with chemo, and apparently has a fantastic
oncologist working with him. He's treating cancer as a chronic disease,
like arthritis, UC, or Crohnes, keeping it in check and controlled.

But there are other options as well; other alternatives to try, either
to begin with, or if and when some other route fails to work.

The most important thing for all cancer victims to understand,
is that there are other ways to stay alive. And none, absolutely none,
should be disregarded as useless or a waste of time, when whatever
it is that's failed was the only thing tried.

There's been too, too many deaths and worsening conditions
around here lately, and way to much confidence in opinions
that say to enter a hospice, rather than to try another option.

We were born to survive; we have all the ability to do so, built-in
since birth. It's about time we allow ourselves to use that natural
ability, instead of relying on toxic substitutes.

    Healthy thoughts!

NICE is issuing a second consultation document as part of its appraisal of bevacizumab (Avastin) in combination with chemotherapy (oxaliplatin and either 5-fluorouracil or capecitabine) for treating metastatic colorectal cancer. This second draft of the guidance does not recommend bevacizumab for this indication.

This draft guidance has been issued for consultation. NICE has not yet issued final guidance to the NHS.

During consultation on the first draft, the manufacturer of bevacizumab, Roche Products, submitted an amended patient access scheme for consideration by the Independent Appraisal Committee. The Committee, made up of representatives from the NHS, academia, patient groups and industry, has now discussed this additional information, but still considers that the high cost of bevacizumab relative to the benefits it brings means that it is not a cost- effective use of NHS resources for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.

It is estimated that approximately 6,500 people per year might be eligible for the drug, which costs around £20,800 per patient.

Opening this decision to a second stage of consultation means that stakeholders have a further chance to submit comments to the appraisal committee in light of the new information.

Sir Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of NICE said: "We have recommended several treatments for various stages of colorectal cancer, including cetuximab for the first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. We are disappointed not to be able to recommend bevacizumab as well but we have to be confident that the benefits justify the considerable cost of this drug."

In the original proposed patient access scheme, bevacizumab would be supplied at a fixed cost of approximately £20,800 per patient for one year and would be free after 12 months of treatment. The cost of oxaliplatin would also be reimbursed. The new scheme included all these elements plus an additional upfront payment to the NHS for each person starting first-line treatment with bevacizumab.

The Committee felt the proposed patient access scheme was complex and the administrative costs were likely to be higher than in the manufacturer's calculations. It was therefore uncertain what the impact of the scheme would be on the cost effectiveness of bevacizumab

Consultees, healthcare professionals and members of the public are now able to comment on the preliminary recommendations which are available for public consultation from 24 August until 15 September. Comments received during this consultation will be fully considered by the Committee and following this meeting the next draft guidance will be issued.

Until NICE issues final guidance, NHS bodies should make decisions locally on the funding of specific treatments. People who are currently receiving bevacizumab should have the option to continue therapy until they and their clinicians consider it appropriate to stop

    About the guidance

    1. Information on the NICE appraisal of bevacizumab in combination with oxaliplatin and either 5-fluorouracil or capecitabine for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer and the consultation documents are available here.

    2. Metastatic colorectal cancer is when the primary cancer has spread from the colon or rectum to other parts of the body, such as the liver. It can be a devastating disease for both the patient and their family.

    3. NICE has previously recommended Irinotecan, oxaliplatin, capecitabine, tegafur with uracil and cetuximab for the treatment of various stages of colorectal cancer.

    4. One study shows that bevacizumab may provide modest benefits to patients, but the available evidence is highly uncertain.

    5. Although the Committee recognised that bevacizumab may give patients an extra six weeks of life compared with placebo, there were simply too many uncertainties in the economic analysis to be able to recommend the drug for use in the NHS. The also Committee felt that the PAS was complex and the administration costs had been underestimated in the manufacturers ICER calculations.

    (CBS/AP

(CBS) Could popping a daily vitamin D pill help prevent cancer?

It's too early to say for sure, but a new study adds to the growing body of evidence linking a deficiency of the "sunshine vitamin" to colorectal cancer as well as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

That's big news, as up to a billion people around the world are believed to have a vitamin D deficiency - including up half of adults and children in the U.S.

The study, conducted by a team of English and Canadian scientists, revealed a detailed "map" of the molecular interactions between vitamin D and certain genes. The map showed extensive connections between the vitamin and certain genes associated with cancer and autoimmune diseases.

"Genes involved in autoimmune disease and cancer were regulated by vitamin D," study author Dr. Sreeram Ramagopalan of Oxford University told WebMD.

The skin makes vitamin D upon exposure to sunlight. In addition, the vitamin is found in many foods, including oily fish like salmon and milk and other foods that have been fortified with the nutrient.

Current guidelines call for 200 international units (IU) for people up to age 50, 400 IU for people 51 to 70, and 600 IU for people over 70, according to WebMD. But many experts say those doses are too low.

Ramagopalan says 2,000 IU may be more like it, though some experts warn against jumping the gun.

"We will soon have a better understanding of the optimal doses of vitamin D and the optimal blood levels associated with the best balance of benefits and risks," Dr. JoAnn Manson, chairman of the preventive medicine department at Harvard University, told WebMD. "But right now there are too many unanswered questions."

I see that the report was published 18 years ago, and given the time it probably took to accumulate the data I'd venture to say that the numbers are at least 20 years old. I'd be curious to know what the current stats are. I'd be willing to bet that the numbers are up worldwide.

    Carl

    Hi Carl!

The Canadian list (one of the links) is from 2004, but of course I
would expect the numbers to be higher, since the population growth
    is higher.

Statistically, the numbers do grow each year, but so does the amount
of toxic chemicals that manage to be approved for use. Likewise, the
amount of residual toxins used in agriculture and commercial farming,
and their cumulative effects grow also, all making for an unhealthy
    environment.

But the bottom line remains, that our immune system should be taking
dead and/or dying cells out, not leaving them to fester and grow by
their own means. The toxins may or may not damage our cells, but
it does damage our immune system........

We all want to find something safe to us to either get rid of cancer,
or be able to live with it... and the solution might be in front at us,
as big as life, while we avoid looking at it....

    Good health to you!

    WOW....that's what i LOVE
WOW....that's what i LOVE about this board....ASK and you shall receive in detail!!!

THanks John and Nana! I always read your posts with interest.
Like I tell everyone if someone said french fries caused my cancer, I would quit eating french fries!! But we know, it just isnt' that simple! I have read alot of cancer/nutrition books, and have changed the way I eat to basically what you are saying. Like you said, no guarantees it works, but I've certainly heard enough stories from people who have had reoccurences to know that it can help. I just figure if the beast comes knockin again, I want to believe I did what i could to keep it at bay! I HATED chemo, I know so shocking....
and decided I wouldn't take it as a "preventative" measure after my liver resection like my onc suggested. My surgeon felt very confident that he removed it all, so I was going with that!
I will check out your sights, and compare the supplements of what my naturopath has given me and what you two are using! GREAT STUFF! THANK YOU BOTH AGAIN!~!!

    Veggiephobia ?

Once you juice cabbage, you'll love anything that doesn't look
    like a cabbage.

Seriously, try adding an apple to each mix. I started with an added
apple, a peach and a carrot or two. It makes the pungent veggies
    more tolerable.

But I slurp herbal broths, so what do I know about good taste?

The juicer companies tell us not to start with all greens, not only
due to the taste impact, but for digestive reasons. One cup of
juiced veggies equals a lot more veggies than you've probably
eaten in any given week. It's concentrated green! POW.
(or BAM, depending on the TV cook)

So they say to start with fruit and a minor amount of greens,
and slowly work your way up to more greens than fruit.

An apple can make cabbage easier to take. Plums, grapes,
anything that smells good to you, is what to use.

It doesn't have to taste bad or cause pain, to make you healthy!

    Enjoy life!

    Ahh...so glad you brought
Ahh...so glad you brought that up. You had mentioned this earlier and since I have a Trader Joes that I shop at all the time, I wanted to pick some up. Does this come in a powder or are you buying a juice? do you take this instead of juicing your own stuff? Sounds simpler :):)
    WOW is it loaded!!!!!

    Thanks Nana!

Powder and I mix it with
Powder and I mix it with some of Trader Joe's 100% juice. Caution when a container says, for instance cranberry juice, it's not always 100% cranberry juice (or whatever your buying), it may be loaded with different juices, making it 100% juice. Labels are misleading until you read the ingredients. I also take it with green ice tea. one scoop in about two fingers of liquid. You will feel energized so don't take it before bed.
