Hello to all I hope everyone is doing some what well. I am 25 years old, and in April of 2010 I got diagnosis with tongue cancer. I don't know what stage of what the correct name of the cancer is or shall I say was. On July 16,2010 I had my sergury to have part of my right tounge removed, along with the removal of my right lymph node. The doctors ws not sure if it infact did spread to the lymph nodes. Any how after the sergury was over I found that they had giving me a Tracheotomy only for breathing perposses, but the other big thing that scared me was that they had inplanted a metal plate in my jaw. They did'nt tell me that they were going to open my jaw. I am very upset at that but I am so thankful that the cancer I was told was fully removed. So they say I am cancer free. I dont know how much longer is my recovery. I do hope it's fast and healty.

Hi Shanito, welcome to the site. I'm very glad to hear your cancer was removed, and hope with you that your recovery will be fast and healthy. Are you going to receive any further treatment Shanito? Any radiatioin treatments, or chemotherapy? If your doctors are satisfied no further treatment is needed, then your recovery will be faster. I'm not sure what the plate in your jaw was for. It would be good to ask your doctor about that, and also ask about a PET or CT scan to check the area for any activity in the lymph glands. Let us know what your doctors have planned for you, and very best of luck in your recovery.

    best, Hal

    Welcome
Good to hear the cancer's gone - sorry it was there in the first place. I'm with Hal - I would surely ask for details on what made the jaw plate necessary. I hope you have a speedy and boring recovery. Keep us posted. Be well.

    WELCOME SHANITO JAW PLATE
Shanito, my primary site was thought to originally be located at the BOT. The site has since been changed to te Right Tonsil. My Surgeon told me when we thought it was BOT that if there was not sufficient room to use a surgical scope or robitic instrumaents, it may require him breaking my jaw in 1-2 places to get to where the cancer was. I am guessing that is what happened to you. I was also told a plate and screws might be required to repair the jaw.

I see my Surgeon this Thursday to see if the cancer is HPV+ and to set a date for my surgery.

How are you recovering from the surgery? Any thing you can tell me about what to expect after the surgery is appreciated.

    BEST!!!

    Tongue cancer
Hi Shanito, I did not have tongue cancer I had laryngeal cancer, I had radiation and chemo last May-June, and have so far, been good to go. have a pet scan in September. I was treated at Hershey medical Center too, who was your doctor? Believe me, they are great there, I had a Dr. Goldenberg, outstanding doc but a little rough around the edges, matter of fact and thorough, he is the ENT, as I did not have surgery he just follows up with me on scopes etc. The main doctor for me is a Dr. Mackley the radio guy. If you do have Goldenberg be just as thorough as him and ask every question.
