The title of a book is so crucial in order to capture the reader’s attention. I’ve listened to what you have all said – I thank you for thinking enough of me and having confidence that I might could pull something like this off. On more than one occasion, I have received posts from you telling me that I should write a book. My last post on loneliness and the battle, elicited such overwhelming support that I finally had to sit up and listen to what you had to tell me. I’ve just written the DEDICATION and here is an excerpt from my untitled book: To the Semi;Colons for their encouragement and support in helping me realize one of my dreams – to write a book on our cancer experiences, so that others will not have to walk alone during their journey. My story is your story and I thank you for your love, friendship, and all of the support you have given me. In my head, I’m working on the Forward and have outlined several ideas that will become the chapters of the book. Very early, but I’ve got concepts for about 6 chapters so far. I’m working on the title of the book now, and thought it would be fun to see what your idea of my book title might be. Here’s one that I’m feeling strongly about right now: “The Beast Within” – An Introspective Journey Inside the World of Cancer So, if you have some ideas for the title, please let me know. Or if you like the “pending” title, you can tell me if you like that or not. It will be fun to see your perspectives on this post – and we could all use a tiny break in the action to have some fun with this. Thank you in advance for all who participates. Great seeing you all today:) -Craig |

Already a book........
There's already a book, a game and a movie called 'The Beast Within'. That might hurt sales just because people would assume. You could mix it up with some personalization like 'The Beast Within Me'.

Hi Craig,
Good for you for making this happen! I like your title; alternatively before I read your idea I was thinking about how Donna calls you "Lion" + thought about "The Lion DOESN'T sleep tonight" - You know that old song but changing it a little.
All the best with this endeavour.

It also would go along with the "Relay for Life" Where they walk at night because cancer also does not sleep!

A BOOK !!!!!
I am glad that you are seriously considering writing a book, I think you have "all the ingredients" needed to do it, so go for it. I like the title that you mention, but if it is already part of another book or movie (The beast within)as Diane says, maybe it will no be the best title.Just my opinion

My 2 cents
Well Craig, after reading some of your bio and stories I think the title should be more personal than commercial. Your "public" battle told on here and your personal accomplishments that have kept you here (alive). How about "Da Vici's Lullaby, One man's cancer journey shared with friends".. Reffering to the procedure that you had, the obvious Allison Kraus connection and your presence here. I would steer away from the angry notions like "Beast, Monster, etc.... You have been a very positive force on here and that should be the tempo of your writings. IMHO.....

Wow - this is some good stuff!
Please, please keep sending in your thoughts and ideas - it's a great sounding board and I knew that I could count on you guys to tell it like it is.
All of your ideas have been good. I'm enjoying reading them and seeing the perspective "from your eyes."
I'll have a lot to think about - have done some research on what it takes to get a book published and how to find a literary agent.
I'm in a whole new world, well actually I'm on the outside looking in - scary and exciting at the same time!
A big thank you and please keep your ideas coming...this book is being written with all of us in mind - I need all of you along for this rollercoaster ride...please keep all hands and feet inside the car while the ride is in motion, LOL:)
Hope I have not bitten off more than I can chew:)

Oh well.
Oh well.
I thought you'd go with the "CraigsList" one, but.....
How about:
"Hindsight" A look into my wrecked rectum.
"No Butts About Us" Tails from the past.
"No Passing" A new world without the crap.
"My rear view of life" A book about my half-assed situation.
"The Rectum Whisperer" Words cannnot make up for waste.
"Shortened exits" Intestinal fortitude at it's best.
Gee Craig, your comment:
"Hope I have not bitten off more than I can chew"
was reminescent of Marv Albert's famous situation. In a slightly
different context, of course....
I'll stop now..... my head hurts.

I think the book is an awesome idea. I was desperate to hear how others were doing and handling things and this site has been great. I'm sure insights into your own personal journey in book form will be helpful to alot of people. My first gutt feeling when Jim was diagnosed was that there was an "unwelcome stranger" who had moved in the house with us. That Cancer. Always there lurking, disrupting our thoughts, there when we ate or talked or tried to sleep. Unwilling to leave. So my pitch for a title would be something to do with that unwanted or unwelcome stranger.
Good luck...I imagine this will be very theraputic for you as well.

Craig, I am so glad that you are seriously considering writing a book. You have a talent that could help a lot of people. When I was first DX I ran out and bought lots of books about cancer. (I still buy books). A couple of them really helped me with this battle. I like your title, and look forward to reading your book. Brenda

Your Book Title
I'm with everyone else on this Craig. I think this is a great idea.
I really like your notion of "An Introspective Journey..."
INTROSPECTIVE...
In your sharing here you have looked deep within your soul, at all of the struggles and dilemmas, as well as the joys and delights. You have "boldly gone where no man has gone before", to explore the inner landscape of fear and loneliness, as well as that of friendship and compassion. You have shared the wisdom of this "inner-seeing" with us with incredible vulnerability and authenticity. The inner work is the hard work. You are doing it. And because of your sharing it, you invite us to it.
JOURNEY...
You present your story naturally as that of a "journey". Your profile page is "The Journey Continues..." This is a rich and meaningful metaphor and a refreshing alternative to the more common "war/battle" imagery that is so overused. This is NOT to say we don't have demons and battles along the way. Of course we do. They just happen in the larger context of our lives, which are more like journeys, than wars. The journey theme really resonates with who you are Craig. You talk about where you have been, where you are today, and where you are going. (even when you don't know how you are getting there!! :) :)
So, I really hope you will keep those two pieces.
I think the title will evolve Craig, as the book does.
I really like all of the suggestions here too!! What a creative crew!
And I definitely want an autographed copy too!

Thanks So Much!
Really some good stuff in this thread - been a pleasure to read through these. Some funny ones have made me laugh and grin, and there are some good titles and some thought behind the other ones.
I'm starting to agree with you guys - as Phil eluded to, content 1st, title 2nd. Normally, I can come up with something pretty good, but I'm going to have to think this one through.
It's been great having your suggestions and comments - a little levity is always good for the family.
But, as always, I'll be taken everything you said to heart. I'm in the planning phase, so I'll go back to working on the ideas for what the chapters will be about.
I wonder how it will all turn out, but the chase for it is surely going to be a ride:)

OH MY GOSH!
I am so happy that you are considering this book idea. Sounds like a real plan and I will be so proud to read it. I wish I could give an opinion on the title for this book, but I don't think anything I submit would compare to what you've already been given. I agree with the thought that you should make it a "catchy" title, tho. Nothing that sounds like it's written by a professional as in dr.,nurse or onc. Just a regular guy who got cancer.
Now when do you see that dr. again? I think it's coming up, isn't it?
