Probiotic fad

The after the colonoscopy I had last week my bowels were just not working like normal. My wife decided that I needed some Probiotic help.

When you have been married forever, you learn to throw them a bone every now and then just to keep peace in the home. Her logic was I had flushed all my bacteria out with the colonoscopy prep. So I agreed to take her human body Rid-X capsules. I took them for just 2 days.

Never again! That stuff set me back big time. I’ve got bugs growing like weeds in me. The first day I was on the john 4 times. I should have seen this as a sign my old body just doesn’t like lab developed bugs. But with chemo brain and old age, I did not connect the dots.

Then the second day, I was down in the barn hunkered down under my mower taking the blades off to sharpen them when yet another wave of urgency hit me. It’s a long run up to the house and I almost became a charter member of the “I crapped in my pants again club”, but I did make it. My normal gut bugs that hung in there during the prep, obviously don’t get along with the foreign invaders. I have not had this urgency problem for months.

Anybody else had problems with this Probiotic fad????

    Depends on the probiotic mix
An integrative medicine MD gave me "GI Revive" for a month after my gut refused to work normally post-chemo, to help regenerate the mucosal lining. He also recommended 40 billion units of Probiotics daily, to include both Acidophilus and Bifidus strains.

Set me right. I'm still doing the probiotic. Neither ever caused urgency.

We'll see how it goes after my colonoscopy next week - that will be my first major "insult" to my gut since chemo.

    Align
I have been using Align. I've not had any problems with it. Being female, and being in the hospital 3 times with lots of antibiotics, gives us other issues than the guys. Maybe we respond better to the probiotics??? I don't know that for a fact, but it's a thought.

    I...
Have been using Vinco's that I bought from the pharmacy, and the pharmacist said it was very good for people even going through chemo. It just replaces the good bacteria that is killed since chemo kills off the good and bad bacteria. My onc showed the brochure about it I gave her, and she passed it on to her hospital pharmacist, to make sure it be ok to use, and he said the same thing, so my onc gave me the "go ahead" to take them, and I've had no issues with them at all :)

    I Been
Wanting to try Greek Yogurt! they make a good Cucumber-Greek Yogurt dressing that they use on Gyros, and souvlakis, even as veggie and fruit dips, I can't find it anywhere around me! Makes me mad :(

I love herbal teas, and Chamomille is a nice relaxing tea. I like the orange and ginseng teas as well. I've never had any kind effect with it, so sorry to hear your mom had cramping with it. They don't usually hurt anyone, though I just have never heard of it hurting anyone probably. Dr. Oz was the one who got me into the Probiotics interest. I don't know if you watch him, but he's very unconventional, and uses natural rememdys, and all, it's very interesting to watch him. You'd never think he was a heart surgeon LOL..he seems to veer more to the unconvential ways to health.

    Hugsss!

    Rid-X
In 5 years I have never had problems with probiotics and will always take some form of them.

I live in the country and lots of people including me have wells and septic tanks. There is a popular product here called Rid-X that is used to clean the pipes of the septic tanks.

Maybe it's the same stuff you took, sure sounds like it.

and have never had a problem with it.

Now that I read Donna's posting, maybe I should talk to a pharmacist to see what they recommend. :o)

    guys are filthy pigs
Offhand from the above I would say Probiotics are a woman thing. I think that since most of us guys are filthy pigs (my wife’s words) we don’t need to take them. I sure won’t again.

    Probiotics
Not only does it do the intestinal tract good as far as replacing good flora necessary to keep things going smoothly, it helps strengthen your immune system; always a good thing! I found it useful only SOME times during chemo-induced diarrhea, however. More likely than not, it made a tough problem worse by increasing gas, etc. But while not on chemo, probiotics are indispensable in keeping my digestive tract happy!
