Discomfort on right upper side where liver is located.

I've noticed a sort of pain or discomfort on the right upper side where my liver is located. I had surgery for colon cancer last May and my first thoughts about this pain was that the cancer had spread to the liver. I had a CT scan in June, 2010 which said this about the liver: "Liver is low in density compatible with fatty infiltration. No liver mass is seen." Anyway, should I be worried about this and have another CT scan. Could liver cancer have developed in the past eight months? I've had about six CT scans last year and don't want to have so many that glow in the dark.

You might ask your Dr. to do a MRI of the Abdomen. My husband's liver cancer did not show up on any of the cat scans just when they did the MRI. My husband's tumor markers were getting higher but they just kept doing cat scans and nothing showed. It never hurts to be safe.

    Hi Flyer,
    Sorry to read you

    Hi Flyer,
Sorry to read you are having this pain. My dad recently passed on 3/9 with mets to his liver. Pain on your right side, could be your gallbladder. Have an ultrasound done of your gallbladder and liver. My dad had an ultrasound done to find he had lesions on his liver. Do not let this go on much longer. Best of luck and keep us posted.

    Assessing Pain
Hey! When u had ur surgery for you colon cancer where there any incisions that could had produced scar tissue in this area. If not definitely let someone check for ur gallbladder as well as your liver. Sharp pain or mild discomfort. Associated with eating or not?.
    Keep in touch. I'm curious.
I'm also a nurse so that's why I'm asking all the questions. Good Luck LJW1121

The pain, or maybe I should say a dull ache, seems to be under the bottom rib on the left side. Seems to go away when I lay down, and seems to be more intense when I'm sitting. Doesn't seem to get any worst from eating. I did have the acending colon removed and that's on the right side. Don't know if that is causing it or the gallbladder or liver.

    Dull Ache
    Hi Cessna,
Please go to the dr. today and have an ultra sound done of your liver and gallbladder!!! Do not **** your pain yourself any longer. Believe me...my dad complained of that same dull aching pain. It is better to be safe than sorry. Having consistant pain is not a good sign, and not something you should just live with. Thanks for keeping us updated, I was starting to worry about you! Let us know how the drs appt. goes.

    Hi lcarper,
    This is exactley

    Hi lcarper,
This is exactley what my dad had. A blocked bile duct in his liver. The ultra sound showed lesions on his liver. He was in tremendous pain. They had to put a stent in the blocked bile duct. This helped get rid of the jaundice, but he still had the pain. He started oral chemo xeloda for the liver cancer. This made him even sicker than he was to begin with. He took the chemo for 30 days. Unfortunately he passed away from this on 3/9/10. He had gotten mets to his liver from esophageal cancer, which he beat. He could not beat this liver cancer. Will you be starting chemo treatments? Best of luck to you. Dad relied on morphine and oxycodone pain meds to relieve his pain. This helped the pain, but made him sooo out of it. Prayers to you. Keep us posted.

  • PET scan
Maybe you can request a PET scan. They will inject your body with radiation which will light up any area of your body with cancer.

    FYI
If your rectal cancer was on the right side in the acsending colon that may be where they moved your small intestine to take the place of the ascending colon...that's where mine is and I have that small twinge....something to consider.

    Hi, I am having something
Hi, I am having something similar. I am doing Taxol chemo for BC and the dull ache on my right side near the liver appeared about 3 weeks ago. The whole area is rather tender. The Onc. poked around in that area and said it could be gall bladder. He suggested an ultra sound but I haven't done that yet as it has gotten a little better and the ALT and AST levels have come down.

I have had Hep. C for almost 40 years (although they have not detected the virus for the last 3 years) so I have my concerns about liver function particularly being on chemo.

HI my dad was diagnosed with
HI my dad was diagnosed with primary liver cancer in march 2010, healthy as a horse, never been sick! He was complaining of right upper quadrent pain associated with occasional nausea and vomiting after eating....sure enough "its probably your gall bladder dad" said my sister and I who are both nurses. We were dead wrong! He had 3 ultrasounds in different hospitals to evaluate this but they neemed to have missed the 9cm mass on the right lobe of his liver. The reason they were missed is because he has fatty liver also so the density of the tumor and the fat mesh together and does not show up on ultrasound. They did however see it on a CT scan. Im not sure the degree of your fatty liver but i agree an MRI is probably the best way to go :)

    Hi SarahD
I just read your post about your dad. Made me think back to my dad of course! How is your dad doing now? What treatment is he having done? Is he eligable for surgery? Just wondering. I was also wondering what in the world ever happened to Cessnaflyer? He has not posted since March!
