Shoulder pain

When I was in the outpatient facility last week I met one of my CC friends who had an HAI pump implanted the same time as my liver surgery (Feb 2009). He had a sling on his arm and over his shoulder. I asked him what happened and he said that he had had pain in his shoulder and it turned out that the rotator cuff was damaged during surgery. Once he said that it hit me that surgery was probably the reason for my own shoulder pain as well. I have a hard time putting my hand/arm above my shoulder (only when lying on my back). I discussed it a bit with my doctor and I didn't really think about it at the time but during surgery my arms were pinned over my head for about 7 hours. This can cause damage to the shoulder and treatment is either physical therapy or surgery.

I posted this in case anyone else has experienced shoulder pain and may not have thought about past surgery as a possible cause.

    Arms Pinned
Mom_2_3, they often pin your arms over your head during surgery. It makes it easier for them to extract your wallet out of your pocket.
I hope you and your friend feel better, I didn't have shoulder pain from the HAI pump but that area was very sore for a quite a while.

    Shoulder Pain
I hadn't really thought about the arms being pinned above my head and connecting that to shoulder pain until I bumped into my friend. He actually had to have surgery. Now that I am doing some physical therapy on my shoulder it feels much better.

For the price of that surgery I was thinking they would have thrown in a tummy tuck and some liposuction....

    OMG!
That explains why I had such bad shoulder pain for months after my liver resection! Only until recently is it better and that is because I have been working out and stretching that side. For awhile it felt like it was out of place and I couldn't raise it above my head.

I didn't know they tied your arms up??? Lordy, what else do they do? Never mind, I don't want to know!

I agree, a tummy tuck and some lipo would have been nice. :-)

    My surgeon
The pain was so bad in my shoulder I couldn't even bring my one arm up above my head anytime I was lying down. So I was happy that there was an explanation...

My surgeon told me that they recorded the entire operation for some reason (I think he said teaching video). Anyway, he asked if I would like to see it...ummm....no thanks!! I don't want to know!! I always think of that Seinfeld episode where Kramer is watching a surgery and ends up accidentally throwing a Jr Mint into the patient....

    :)

PS We're waiting to hear your results...

    Seinfield!
That was a good one! To see the video....no no no! Some things are better just not knowing.

We are in Houston waiting to meet with my doc at 8:30 in the morning. Talk about ANXIETY!! I did the bloodwork and CT and Chest XRay yesterday and the PET today.
    UGH!

Keep me in your prayers! :-)

AMY - when are your scans??
