Wow, some places I never heard of that don't exist in the midwest. Fish and soup seem to be popular. I'm making some home made chicken soup tonight, It's so cold in Chicago today I just can't get warm. Went to my doctor for bloddwork for a thyroid test to see if that is why I'm freezing. Thanks for the responses, I'm going to try some ot the things suggested. I've lost 40 lbs along the way and generally eat salad, soup, and grains but on occasion when traveling do have to eat out somewhere. Keep the ideas comming.

Don’t worry about trying to gain to much weight back fast, its taking me 4 ½ years to gain 22 lbs.

Its 66 disagrees here in Louisianan to day, sunny and just great, but will be freezing by this week-end. I am like you not looking forward to the cold weather, except that is the weather for Gumbo here, and I am looking forward to Gumbo.

Take care my friend and God be with you.

    Chipotle - Hooray, Guacamole!
    Ratface,

For me, during part of my chemo mouth phases, I was able to eat Chipotle's. After unsuccessfully trying to eat chicken and rice with guacamole, I settled on beans and guacamole, and mashed the beans to eat them (workers very kindly didn't charge for the beans when they saw I couldn't eat my dinner). Guacamole's full of MUFAs (good for you fats), and it's nice and cooling and slimey; the beans aren't spicy, so didn't burn. So, I got a fairly decent amount of calories with protein and MUFAs.

Also liked Egg Drop Soup in shopping mall food court - unfortunately, it's high in sodium, I think.

    Keep up the (yummy) research,

    - Pam

If you ARE a meat eater and have problems eating meat, including fish, which is, after all, equivalent to cow meat in the eyes of the fish, I can state from personal experience that processed meat is easier, much easier to eat, than the alternative.

The theory in my house is that the meat, having been 'processed', has already been chewed by something else (we should all try to avoid meat that has been previously chewed by SOMEONE else).

The first meat I ate after head/neck cancer surgery, in fact, was half of a MickeyD cheeseburger (without the bun: bread stuck to the roof of the mouth which is a bad deal for someone with a shorter than average tongue).

(The first MEAL I attempted after that surgery was a huge blueberry cheesecake slice in the hospital cafeteria ... and they have really good food, despite the stereotypes ... I cannot fathom the cajones I had to attempt that then.)

After 7 months out from radiation/chemo, I seem to really be into eating chicken. Love the simple chicken sandwiches at both Wendy's and Chick-fil-A. Also get a big Chocolate Frosty at Wendy's. Another favorite of mine is the Big Box Combo ar Raising Canes..(5 chicken fingers, Slaw, Texas Toast and Fries)...but it usually takes me around an hour and 15 minutes to eat it. Grilled redfish and talapia with bernaise sauce do me right also. I'm fortunate to have so many places within walking distance to try something new quite frequently. Geaux Saints !

Hi Joe. The problem I have with some meat is that is not raised without growth hormones nor without nutritional giudelines that would produce the healthiest meat available to me. I am not a scientist and not really an expert on this subject, but my understanding is that meat produced at fast food establishments is cheaply farmed, corn fed, and non-free range. The cow then is stressed, nutritionally deficient, and injected with who knows what. The omega 6/3 imbalance then, if you proscribe to the book AntiCancer, may create inflammation which may give rise to cancer.

The meat I'm eating is free range, grass fed buffalo. It is extremely lean but I know where it comes from. I have it as steaks or ground (processed). I also eat salmon, but not too much because of mercury contamination.

    Being Cold

    Ratface,

Not sure if your on Blood Pressure pills or not, I am, and one side effect of them is cold feet and hands. If my feet are cold, I'm cold. I start wearing longjohns right after Holloween and stop around Easter. That's me though, not sure about anyone else. My wife on the other hand is always warm, that is a good thing : )

    Hi Joe
In Britain recently, parents have been urged not to put ham and other processed meat into their children's lunchboxes to avoid them developing a cancer risk later in life. If we as adults contine to eat them, be it so but you would be doing your children a great desservice by encouraging them to develop a taste for smoked, cured or salted meats.

Having said that, I know it is difficult as my teenage son do love the Mcsausage muffin. I live in Canada now and I wish the authorities here would do likewise in UK to put the message across.

    Hi Marine

No I'm not on BP pills and was just at the Doc yesterday and it was fine. I'm suspecting thyroid or just the lost 40lbs are making a differnce. It dosen't help that I live in Chicago. Honestly I don't remember ever being this cold during winter so it must be related to the treatment. My bloodwork should be back by tomorrow checking the thyroid.

    Duofold Henleys
3 months post treatment I only feel slightly cold. (Live on Lake Huron north of Detroit) Got my first lesson in really cold weather while in the Army. (2 years at Fort Wainwright Alaska) When I worked in the field (survey technician) year round I would develope a metabolism that my wife thought was amazing. She said it was like a furnace. On cold evenings there was always a battle to sit with Dad. My daughter, wife and cats to see who would get there first. During my treatment I about froze. It was only fall but I just couldn't keep warm. I dug out my Duofold 3 button henleys (wool and cotton)and have worn them all winter so far. Though I am able to stay warmer since adding 15 pounds back on I am not my old heating self just yet. These shirts are much better than a tee and wear very well.

I have to say, I like the McD's fish fillets. Something about the sauce. lol! I tried one a while back, when I shouldn't of. I really wasn't ready to swallow that well yet. But I sure tried!! Gonna have to try again, now that I am able to eat more things.

And about being cold. I swear, I am cold all of the time! It's a game between my hubbie and I. I will turn the heat up and he'll come behind me and turn the heat down. But not wonder I am cold all of the time. I am 5' and only weigh 95 lbs.! I'm still trying to gain that extra 10lbs that I had on me before radiation.

I'm not sure what it is about those fish sandwhichs....before I never cared for them, I eat a lot of fresh fish. But since treatment I also like them. I think part of it is because the cheese and tartar sauce helps them slide down easier..LOL.

    Must dip sandwiches in liquid
At first, I could eat tomato sandwiches. My saliva probably is worse after aging. Had my NPC 12 years ago.

When I visit a fast food place, I always order coffee or a small cartoon of milk. The Big Mac or Whopper now has too much meat and is difficult for me to swallow. I dip the cheeseburger or fish sandwich in the coffee or milk. I also have a coke or milkshake with the sandwich.

On submarine sandwiches, I always take them home. I dip it in Cream of Mushroom soup. Am lucky that the finally built a CostCo in the area.

    Salads?
Do wonder, hawvet, if chef-style salads played a part in your recovery diet. They are of critical importance to me- I weigh more, now, than I did 5 years ago! Can't get enough of such salads, w/French dressing. Something about them is just so agreeable. Please advise-

    Hi everybody,
Finished my radiotherapy and chemo 4 weeks ago for NPC. Wondering when will I get my taste back. Hard to eat when all foods taste the same - bland and dry. I also need to gain back my weight, So far my wife prepares brown rice mixed with beans and steam vegetables + soups for lunch and dinner, eggs, oatmeals and beans + juice for breakfast.
cut up fruits and more juice for snacks. With this diet, I am wondering when will I be able to gain weight. I lost 24 lbs.
To Hawvet, could you also share with me your lifestyle after treated for NPC 12 years ago?

    Gaining weight
Hi Frank. Happy to hear you have finished the chemo.

Eating is definitely not as pleasurable as it was pre-cancer but you must keep trying and experimenting with different foods. I'm 4 months post treatment and my taste buds are slowly returning, still not as good as they used to be but at least now I can taste some foods. I still suffer from severe dry mouth so I keep a bottle of water with me at all times. Saliva production is near 0 but my doctors have already told me not to expect this to get any better because my salivary glands were "fried" from the radiation. I guess it's the price we must pay, it's definitely better than the alternative.

I have been able to maintain my weight but was unable to gain any until I started drinking the Ensure Plus again. I drink 2 or 3 bottles a day and have finally managed to gain 3 pounds. LOL - this is the first time in my life that I have had a hard time gaining weight. I'm not crazy about the taste of the Ensure so I just think of it as a medicine I must take daily. I do not eat sweets or junk food, even though they would probably help me gain weight, I prefer to eat healthy, nutritional foods which will benefit me. The Ensure is an additional 1050 calories per day and is quite nutritional.

Hope everything improves for you and you are soon on your way to enjoying eating again.

    Stay strong and keep smiling,
    Glenna
