Hello Emily,

I saw your post today + I felt I wanted to let you know that I think your presence on this board has a huge impact + I truly appreciate it when you post. Let me try to explain how I think you have made a huge difference. First, you don't have to be here, your treatment has ended successfully + you could easily "move on"; yet you have posted frequently since I have joined this group. You show us what is possible. Secondly, I know you were discouraged when you found out what some people are eating. I believe many people have been influenced by your encouragement to juice + eat healthier, but I know it didn't show very much on that thread. However I have seen many posts where people talk about juicing, what to juice, what Emily juices, etc. I think some people make huge changes in their diets with this disease, some make no change + some people make subtle, on-going improvements in their diet. I believe the third category is where many people fall + where you probably have made the most impact. I have a degree in nutrition, but never juiced until my cancer diagnosis (a friend who is a cancer survivor highly recommended it). I don't juice all the time but I do juice + I find when you talk about what you are juicing currently, it really inspires me...+ I see combinations of foods that I might not think of. I bet there are others are similar. I also enjoy your approach when you post + I always enjoy your sign-offs; they make me smile. I can understand why it is difficult for you to be on this board, but I wanted you to know I think you have made more of a difference than you think + I for one have been positively influenced. I hope your hand is healing well.

anne what a wonderful thoughtful response. Emily I could feel your pain when people responded with what they were eating...I know it influenced you greatly Emily. but I agree with anne you have made an impact on what people chose to eat...people have become so juiced up with hope and enthusiasm...never doubt the positive influence you have had dearest girl.

Em what we eat is a huge problem....you have helped...do not doubt yourself...we are all weak and apparently sin quite frequently....don't give up on us Emily

Emily, I wrote a very long PM and then decided not to send it because I get worked up about stuff like eating fast food/ junk food, unhealthy foods after a dx like ours!

Since coming here and reading both your story and Lisa's (Scouty) story I quickly changed my already pretty healthy diet to one with NO processed foods, no fats, no red meats, no pork, loads of veggies and fruits plus added in supplements and exercise! I'm not but a few pounds (8?) overweight, but I'm working really hard and hoping to get up to 10 miles a day very soon. Just a walkin' and a dancin' my way to 103 years old.

You both have been a great help to me and I'd like to thank both of you!

BTW.... on Colon Club a few months back, a thread got off track and a group said if they had to choose between being able to drink alcohol and having colon cancer, they take cancer! I was angered and shocked that anyone would value a drink more than life itself!

Thanks for being here, both of you!

    hello anne et al,

Thank you for your kind words. I surely hope no one thinks I went off in a huff or anything. No drama here. :-) I haven't been posting mostly because of my serious injury when I burned my hand three weeks ago. ZTyping has been tedious but is getting better. Thanks for asking.

There are also a lot of threads that I really can't add anything to so I just lurk a little bit.

It's very nice to know that I have positively influenced my friends and semi-colon "family" on these boards. It's important to me to try to remain positive and give hope to others.

Yes, I get passionate about health as I continue to search for my own answers about my health issues. My Mayo allergist said that I have Mast Cell Activation Disorder last fall so since then I have been on a low histamine/low allergy diet that I researched and experimented with that's been working quite nicely (besides losing 26 pounds --and 20 inches!) keeping me from allergy attacks that had been landing me in the ER this summer and fall.(juicing, of course, is the foundation) Point is, when I have a health crisis, I go immediately to diet. It's hard for me to fathom that not everyone does. Added to this is when my friends and semi colon family members are dying and the frustration grows.

Thanks for the reminder that people ARE making changes as best they can given the information they have.

Thanks for taking the time to share with me.

peace, emily the perennial juice chick! ;-)

over the past 8 years i haven't been without "sin" either (i'm human) until last fall when I had this newer health crisis, but i DO WANT TO (oops caps lock)point out that I still consider myslef in "maintenance treatment" since my "treatment" was based on alternatives and I still juice DAILY 32 oz of organic veggie juice (currently cabbage, kale, romaine, apple, carrot) and go for massages and take vit d and fish oils and probiotics daily. not to mention exercise and prayer. :-) just wanted to clarify that I consider myself in a lifelong "treatment" of keeping my body free of cancer. diligence! and I, as fedester says, never ever give up!

and along with that may I add......
that I think some of my talk about things that I eat may have caused a little upset in our family balance and although my intentions on my thoughts about what I ate were I thought good, were really not in good "taste" ( no pun intended )with what really needs to be done as a preventative to prevent acceleration or return of the disease. It was most likely a slip of my tongue ( most likely pretty likely) about Southern cooking and my fancies that are not good for me but what I love having for me as a treat for what I went through. If I offended or hurt feelings I certainly am sorry....I should along with other help also push the health issue with the food also, it wasn't something that appealed to me personally knowing all the while it would certainly be the best thing for me to do, but on the other hand, something that I just decided wasn't for me. Its a choice to make, it was just my personal one. I did learn from that though that health is all round. Not only exercise but nutrition also. So, I have a juicer now and apples, oranges (without the orange peel), grapes (expensive but great) celery, and carrots (yes carrots) are pretty good...actually I like it better without the carrots but carrots it is...I am going to actually try and be healthier (knowing I will slip some) but I think I owe it to the kids and wife to do this...

Love and Hope and handshake to the juice chick with her good hand, and hope her other gets better very soon......and in hopes that she doesn't harbor ill will with a senile ole buzzard

    Thanks for your responses,
Thanks for your responses, Emily! I really admire your commitment & am inspired by it. I have a question for you; when I juice a carrot almost nothing seems to come out - do you need many to get a reasonable amount of juice, or is it just my silly juicer?

    Hey Emily,

You'd be proud of me- I've started juicing. I got a Champion 2000 and have had it a little over a week now. So far, I've juiced mostly combos of organic carrots with blueberries and a granny smith apple. I put some organic lettuce greens in a couple of times. Today, I bought some wheat grass from Henry's and was excited about juicing that. It did end up juicing, but it wasn't easy- the plunger kept getting stuck when I tried to use it to push the wheat grass in. Any suggestions with that?

I am a sister of jucing (7+years and Huskey's and love to read Emily's posts.

I have to order the organic carotts (from the local grocery) and they are delayed in coming in...I am so missing it.

Glad to hear from you and hope your hands are getting better. That must have been a real pain in the you know what to experience.

Em, my huskey, Indy, is old. 14...she now has a tumor in her stomach. I'm just sick about it but she is in no pain at this point. I'm just hoping she tells me when it's time.

    All the difference...

    Emily and "Scouty":

"I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

Like Robert Frost's lament in "The Road Not Taken," there are many paths to a destination, some of them better than others.

With edgy good humor, plucky persistence, and a considerable amount of information, your posts on this board have consistently offered a rich trove of information about treating cancer with diet and lifestyle changes--a different and complementary path for our cancer journeys.

I am grateful to you both for the information you have given, for the encouragement you have offered and for enriching this board with a different perspective.

I do not dismiss the research and treatment of cancer following the traditional route. I am forever grateful to the doctors who have treated my husband and have great respect for many of the treatments and techniques they have employed in pursuit of a cure for his cancer. What I do realize, though, is that traditional medicine does not have all the answers about treating cancer.

It is my sincere hope that we can have more discussion of diet and cancer on this board not less. And, I think specific dietary suggestions (like the juicing recipes that have been posted here) are helpful. Perhaps we could create a category on the board as we have done with articles about cancer and its treatment ("The Reading Room") to identify healthy eating suggestions and to make it easy for people to find dietary information and recipes ("Diet and Cancer" or ???).

    Again, thank you.

It would be great to have a special category for the healthy eating and dietary supplement suggestions, especially for those of us who are new!

Who knows...there might be a book in it...with proceeds to find a cure for what ails us.

I think this is a great idea
I think this is a great idea too. Sometimes even simple things can really make a difference. For example, I don't think everyone realizes that the fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E & K) should be taken with a fat source. It doesn't have to be a high source of fat, but in order for the body to asorb these vitamins, some fat needs to be present. So if you are taking your Vitamin D supplement with just orange juice, have it with a little (not fat-free!) yogurt, for example.

Wonderful post to Em, I been telling her I miss her as well, and knew she was kicked in the gut by Limey's passing, and how hard it was for her to hear what everyone was eating, and she was right, I been juicing, no red meats for me (never been much for steak) but do eat chicken, and turkey. I snack on alot of veggies, fruits and nuts, and have cut down on my sugars as well. I take probiotics, flaxseed oil, and vitamins D3 and B-Complex.

I am so sorry to hear about your injury Em, and though you probably thought you don't make much of a difference here, now you can see how much you do! We love you, and hope you feel better enough soon to be posting more. You are very uplifting, and have given many alot of hope! Your posts are always fun and awesome!

    Hugsss!
