Has anyone have or gone through huge sugar cravings? I have been craving everything and anything sweet. Cakes, cookies, chocolate. All that good, but very bad for you stuff:) I have always liked sweets, but not quite like this.

It is my personal experience that we crave that which we need.

And the notion that sugar feeds cancer is a simplistic distortion that does not take into account the fact there are a number of sugars, only one of them containing the glucose we refer to as sugar commonly. The folks who argue not to consume sugar would not, for example, argue that you should not eat fruit, which contains a sugar called fructose.

My advice is to consult your nutritionist about ways to appease this craving, ways that are healthy for you.

There are certainly things like yogurt and ice cream (and fruit) that might do the job.

At the same time, cindy, if you are not exercising, make a plan to start. Walks are great. It doesn't take much, but it helps you both physically and mentally.

    Take care,

    Hi Cindy, I have not
Hi Cindy, I have not experienced any cravings since my treatment ended 3 months ago. I found it very interesting that during the time frame when I couldn't eat and was using my PEG that my interest in cooking shows went through the roof. I found myself taking notes while watching with the thought that as soon as I could eat again I was going to try what ever it was I was watching. I also had some cravings for fresh fruit during this time but when I tried found the citric acid just way too much. At this point, I'm just eating back to normal, no cravings or desire for anything special. Just trying to eat well and get some of my weight back. Good luck.

    Sugar
Hi Cindy I wouldnt say I craved sugar.. but... after radiation took away most of my taste and smell... as my taste started coming back, sugary type foods were really all I could eat that for one I could taste and two didnt burn my mouth or cause acid reflux. I quickly realized I was creating a bad habit by only eating sweet, so I changed the type of sweet, instead of cookies and cupcakes I ate yogurt and bananas. Instead of ice cream I switched to sherbert.

Switch the type of sweet when you have a craving. Grabbing a banana will get rid of the sweet desire. But nothing beats a tall glass of cold milk and a fresh chocolate chip cookie :)

    Hi Mike,

Just read your post and had to chuckle about your interest in cooking shows during threatment. The same thing happened to me, I would watch all the shows and my wife asked me what I was doing? She said I was torturing myself not being able to eat.

Still can't eat stringy things though.

Hi Cindy. I really want to echo what Joe said. There is some evidence that a more alkali pH may help prevent cancer cells from growing, but he's absolutely right that this is a far too simplistic way of looking at how nutrition impacts health. A diet heavy in sugar tends to build toxins in cells which *may* contribute to mutations, but that is only one factor in a series of factors that contribute to mutation.

The best advice, again as Joe suggested, is to talk with a nutritionist about what your body needs right now. You cannot live without sugar but sugar can come from a variety of sources including vegetables. The idea is to avoid a 'fast food' approach to nutrition but instead a thoughtful, daily plan to make your body a healthy one.

There are tons of books on this, specific to cancer that is, and I've browsed many of them. Most agree that balance is the key and that there is no such thing as a silver bullet to fight cancer.

    Warmly,

    Mick

    Sugar
Hi little Sister, if it is stuff with Natural sugar in it go for it, God made these for us to enjoy and to keep our bodies in good health. If it is the stuff with un-natural process sugar like the man made stuff you put in all those cakes and cookies, I would ask first did God intend for man to eat stuff like this.

The Bible is Gods manual for not only telling us how to live with each other, it also tells us how to take care of the body that God gave to us, what we should eat and what we should not eat.

I look at it like this; I buy and new car, first thing I do is to read the own manual to see what is the best way to keep this new car running in top performance. The manufacture who made the car knows best, I put oil in the engine, water in the radiator and Gas in the fuel tank, I check the tires for correct air pressure, and I am ready to go.

I don’t have to do the things the manufacture said because I own the car; I can put anything in the fuel tank I want because God gave us the freedom of choice. Just how well do you think your car will run with anything else except Gas?

I lived on an Island in Honduras for many years, most of the people there lived well into there 90th and some over 100 years old, they ate only food that was grown on the island, it was very rare to hear someone with cancer. These days it is hard to find anyone on the same island in there 70th or 80th. What Changed, they now get most of there food from the coat.

Little Sister I can tell you this, when I had my first and second NPC cancer’s I was a very heavy eater of sugar. When the cancer came back a third time, I met an herbalist who told me about how bad sugar is for someone with cancer. He was not a medical doctor he was a simple man trying to help people who doctors turned away as un-curable; I am one of his many living testimonies.

Sister if you do eat something with the sugar do it with a minimal amount, just to stop the craving, I too still have them and it is very hard to say no.

There has been very little research in the matter of process sugar in the body and how it affects you body’s ability to heal

Please know this Cindy, I love you and everyone else here, what I have been through with Cancer 3 times I don’t want anyone else to have to go though. Until there is better research in to the affects of process sugar I would advise you to stay away from it as much as possible, but don’t feel guilty if you eat a cookies now and then, just stay away from eating the bag.

    God bless and keep you

Thank you so much for the simple but great advice. You are right, it is very hard to say no to bad sugars. Today I had an appt. with my family Dr. and I told him that I was craving sugar, and because I am quite thin, he told me to go home and eat all the chocolate cake and cookies that I want! And that I am lucky that I can do that. And I thought to myself, I don't think he knows the danger of what a lot of sugar can do.

I am going to try my very hardest to not eat it. Thanks again Hondo.

Just to add on to what Hondo said, there are some fruits that are very high in sugar that you may want to avoid such as dried fruits and honey, especially if you have a co-morbid illness like diabetes. The lesson for everyone is moderation. Anything natural, as Hondo has laid out, is probably ok, but talk it over with a nutritionist and your MD just to make sure.

Is this a cult? Can I join?
Hondo makes some interesting points unintentionally. (If you read this person's posts, you will discover after a number of them that he mainly makes no points: he welcomes and invites and leaves it to others to say anything of substance).

I look at it like this: if God didn't mean for man to invent a car, he wouldn't have let man invent a car. He wouldn't have given man the ability to change radio stations or use his turn signal (some members of the species apparently cannot do the latter).

Did God invent your car, Hondo? Did he? And if not, why do you drive a car? Just wondering.

If God hadn't meant for man to invent man-made sugar substitutes then man would not have been permitted to do so, or so I suppose.

    "Little Sister"?

"Just stay away from eating the bag?"

    Geez.

How dare this person, first, call you his sister? How dare him, second, to insinuate that you might eat the entire bag without his advice?

Cindy, I DON'T love you. I don't even KNOW you. And I, to be honest (something I am, apparently to a fault), can't point you to comforting christian scripture -- but I care about you for reasons that are probably too complex for you to understand, based on your response to this Hondo person.
I will say this, and then leave you alone in these boards: if you want to eat sweets at a time when you can eat little else, then you should eat them. As others have rightly indicated, often it is the sweet taste that comes back first.

I can very much appreciate your comments Joe as a lot of the so-called bible thumping on these boards is sometimes off-putting to me, as I am an atheist, not that I always feel disrespected. Yet I do heartily accept when someone offers me their best wishes and prayers, as I feel fortunate to have someone think of me in those terms. My 'prayers' are focused on what I believe my body has the power to do. I don't really feel it's important to follow and specific mythology about *why* my body can do this; what is most important is that I believe it.

I also very much appreciate your honesty Joe. I think a lot of what I read on these boards is anecdotal and the sources and information need to be vetted and double or triple checked (check with your nutritionist, your Dr, etc.). It is my hope that you both will continue to offer what you each uniquely bring. In that way there is a bit of balance.

    Sincerely,

    Mick

Heck blend them all up in a blender and get the benefits of both... at the same time :)

I love them all and am thankful and blessed to have the option to eat them whenever I feel the need. But someone please tell me when I will or will I ever be able to enjoy a diet coke again :(

Everyone (of course) has their own opinions. And I have mine. I just ask a question that I have and put it out there. And hopefully someone can help me with an answer. Please, both Hondo and Soccerfreak I appreciate your time and thoughts. Thank you again!

My Boss was also atheist we worked together for over 28 years in the oil field running OSV’s and DP Ships. I must say I have never found a more honest man in my life; he never took anything that was not his. In fact he had more morel values then a lot of Christians I worked with. He was one of the greater men I knew in this world; he died 8 years ago at the same time I found out that I had cancer.

    Great looking picture

You're not kidding Sirena! And it all stemmed from sugar. lol!! I do try and eat veggies and fruit. But the problem is, is that food still gets stuck at the top of my throat. So there are certain foods that I can't eat yet. I have to be careful. I take a greens drink, that I get from a Naturopath Dr. and I mix protein powder in with Ensure. I don't know how long this sticking in my throat will go on for. I have to ask my MD.
