I received a newsletter today from www.fightcolorectalcancer.org and one of the articles mentioned a trial for neuropathy. Has anyone heard of this or tried it?

    Clinical Trial for Neuropathy
I was on a clinical trial for neuropathy. I took alpha-lipoic acid. I believe it helped. I had minor symptoms compared to others.

Study Title: PREVENTION OF CISPLATIN- OR OXALIPLATIN-INDUCED PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY WITH ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID: A PLACEBO-CONTROLLED PHASE III TRIAL

Description/Intervention: The goal of this clinical research study is to test the effects (good and bad) of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) in preventing peripheral neuropathy (abnormal, uncomfortable, often painful, sensations and feelings in hands or feet) caused by chemotherapy, as compared to the effect of a placebo. Researchers want to find out if this dietary supplement can help to decrease the symptoms as well.

    ALPHALIPOIC
I AM NEW TO THIS SITE AS OF 1/20/10. I HAVE BEEN DONE WITH CHEMO SINCE 1/7/07 AND STILL HAVE BAD P.N. WITH PAIN, STABBING, BURNING, CRAMPING AND NUMBNESS IN TOES, FEET, CALVES, FOREARMS AND FINGERS. AND, YES, MY RIGHT BIG TOE FEELS LIKE NEEDLES ARE STABBING IT IF IT TOUCHES ANYTHING, SOMETIMES AT NIGHT, JUST TOUCHING THE TOP SHEET HURTS. MY NEUROLOGIST SAYS YOU HAVE TO TAKE 2400 MG/DAY ALPHALIPOIC TO DO ANY GOOD. IT CAN GET EXPENSIVE. I HAVE NOT TRIED IT YET.

    I take ALA
I take ALA on the advice of my certified oncology dietician. 1200mg per day. I've found Target has a much lower price than other places I've looked for this drug. They expect you to take one per day - so that isn't expensive. But to get in 1200, I have to take 6. The bottle goes quickly.

ALA was already proven to significantly help out those with diabetic neuropathy, and the few trials that have been done for chemo neuropathy look promising too.

My problem is I can't really get supplements down the first week of my cycle, so I've not been taking it as religiously as I should.
