What to eat?

I was just diagnosed with throat cancer a week ago. My doctors want me to "bulk up" in anticipation of weight loss. I'm kinda little to begin with. Any suggestions, ideas, or comments on how to gain as much weight as possible in the next couple of weeks?

    eat everything in sight
    Hi Re-nee

Welcome! I immediately started eating everthing I was not supposed to be eating. Milkshakes, Double cheesburgers, pizza, steak, lobster, shrimp, anything you especially love the taste of. It will be a long time before you will taste the things you love now, so now is the time to throw all caution to the wind and go for the hagen-daz!

So, no need to feel quilty about eating half a box of chocolate eclairs? After radiation starts, how soon do the taste buds start to go?

    eggnog?
It isn't quite eggnog season yet and I guess apple cider just isn't the same. I've been on a restricted diet for about 4 years from a different illness and it's hard to think about eating all the foods that I haven't had in years!!!! I'm thinking of calling Fannie May Candy and telling them just to "back up the truck"!

    Sounds good
Sounds a whole lot better than what I had this morning, carnation instant breakfast with an extra teaspoon of protien powder. Nutritionists are sooooo boring.

    Re-nee,

Have you ever heard the expression "if it looks good don't eat it, if it tastes good spit it out"? This is the one time to ignore the Cardiologists' Anthem. The other posters have given you some great ideas. Fannie May is fabulous; get malts instead of plain milkshakes; use lots of real butter; no more "skinny" lattes, the genuine article only; French food; and lots of pasta with meat sauce. Best of health to you; let us know how you're doing.

I would drink lots of milk and also soaked graham crackers in it. I would eat an entire sleeve of graham crackers for a meal with a couple of glasses of milk. This was after treatment but there is nothing wrong with doing it before.

Before treatment was a couple of X-Large Milkshakes every day.

    I know your Cardioligist!
I already can't swallow meat sauce on pasta, the ground beef really bothers my throat but fetticini alfredo is a dandy substitute! Is it odd to have certain foods already bothering me? Is this a foreboding of things to come? I found I really like Julia Child's potato leek soup, after it's cooked and pureed, throw in a cup or so of heavy cream and a couple of pats of butter. The recipe calls for either not both and not in the quantities I'm using. I talked to my chemo doc today, something showed up on my pet scan, so, another biopsy, another planning meeting, it gives me another week or so to keep adding weight.

    Milk, blech.
I've never liked milk, but I'm finding myself gulping down a couple of glasses a day mixed with something. It seems everybody recommends milk in one form or another. After dinner tonight I made myself a fake latte, equal parts of expresso and half & half. It really wasn't that bad.
