My dental checkup and cleaning is scheduled in 2 weeks. Has anyone had problems while on chemo and having the cleaning & x-rays? Thanks.

I was told by my onc pre
I was told by my onc pre chemo to NOT have any cleanings or work done during chemo because of the bacteria in the mouth, etc.

Shayenne had a tooth pulled during chemo and spent 11 days in the hospital.

    Yeah...
Well, that time I had 2 wisdom teeth pulled out, and one was absessed, it got infected, and I ended up in the hospital fighting that infection with some heavy duty antibiotics, but I spent 4 days in the hospital for that, my colostomy operation though was 11 days. But my tooth got absessed during my chemo treatment, so I had no choice but to get it pulled, the dentist asked if I wanted the other one gone too, because he was afraid it was going to get infected as well, and I said go ahead. But the antibiotics did clear it up.

    Hugsss!

    Tell your Doctor
    Dear Lizzy,

Make sure your oncologist is aware of your appointment. Sometimes they premedicate you with antibiotics before any procedure, Very Important.

    Blessings to you,

I was told to make sure I
I was told to make sure I got my dental work done BEFORE starting chemo, and I just did.

Please talk with your oncologist before doing this. He will want to know of any troubles you've had with dry mouth or mouth sores, and check your blood counts and other things first. If all looks well, he may give his blessing, maybe with anti-biotics just in case, or maybe not.

    PS
I always had to be premedicated (antibiotics) if I had any work done below the gum line. That includes cleaning.

Hope that clarifies my earlier post.

    Blessings to all,

    Cleaning
I went in before chemo started and two weeks after it ended. They did give me an antibacterial rinse before they even started and were very gentle. My gums did swell some since I started chemo and bleed more than normal, but I flossed almost everyday so it helped somewhat. I just had 18 x-rays this time too and everything looked great. Good luck with the dentist.

    No dental work
I was told no dental work or cleanings while on chemo, you can get an infection.

    So, AFTER chemo....
I am scheduled to get a crown on a back molar in a week or so. DRAT. I would have gotten it sooner, but my share of the cost is almost $500.00. I'm hoping this is the only tooth chemo affected.

I've always had problems with cavities. I think it has to do with my being a poor southern child in the 1950's who was fed Carnation Condensed Milk mixed with water and honey as an infant and moved to Kool-Aid not much later. We almost never had milk to drink. Mother bought the powdered milk (YUK) for our cereal.
