Compared to other things this seems trivial but need advice

Since my diagnosis and surgery I have had people who have gone through different types of cancer offer their advice and experiences. I am very grateful but need to know from those who have what I have. One thing that keeps coming up is juicing. I am prepared to purchase a juicer and would not mind giving it a try but I don't know which one to purchase or even if it would be worth it.

We have done the internet research thing and have settled on either the Champion or the Omega 8003. Any advice? Should I spend the money? Which one should I purchase?

Also the Dr said that I would be coming off all anti oxidants during chemo. Chemo is set to start on October 28th as long as all the up coming scans are clear
So I am wondering if purchasing a juicer now would be benificial?

I value all of your opinions! I know very little at this point and am still so new to this cancer thing.

    The Juice Chicks
    Hi, Jan

The Juice Chicks: 2bhealed (Emily) and Scouty (Lisa) will see this and give you more information than you could ever hope for...so I'll let them tell you about this.

If I remember, Emily prefers the Champion - and she's going to tell you that it is worth it and I cannot argue with her as her testimony is living proof...wish I was as brave as she is.

And anti-oxidants are not supposed to be done during chemo - what is good for the normal cells is also good for the cancer cells is the theory behind this one.

Juicing during chemo - I defer to the Juice Chicks.

I'm sure they will be along - if not, then you can PM the both of them by just typing in their names I left for you above and they can get that PM when they logon.

    Take care, Jan

Thanks Craig for the info. Thanks also for the how to on PM, this is all new! I am just not sure if I want to spend the bucks for something I can't use for 6 months. I will wait for info from the Juice Chicks or PM them.

    Juicer Advice:
Wow, good thing I randomly logged on to this thread. I don't read many threads due to time constraints and just happened to open this one up....must have been "led" to do it.

So yes, I have a Champion Juicer but I have heard the Omega is very good too. I was able to try out a CHamp before I purchased it (I had had a JuiceMan at the time) so that's why I went with it (I liked it waaaaaay more than the centrifugal JM). I have been juicing with my Champ almost every single day for the past 8 years seriously. I rarely miss a day of juicing....vacations (rare) or when I take a break from juicing (rare).

My friend has an Omega and she likes hers.

It IS an investment but if you make it a LIFESTYLE like I have, it is worth every single penny. I have only replaced two small parts on it in the past 8 years and only because I teach a juicing workshop at my local coop and wanted to have extra parts for quick easy transitions during the teaching. The company is very nice to work with too.

As for juicing during chemo I really cannot help you there since I never did any chemo for my Stage III sigmoid colon cancer. I call my juice CHEMIA which means Juice of the Plant. :-)

You may want to read Beating Cancer with Nutrition by PAtrick Quillin because he breaks down all the supplements and nutrients one needs during cancer and chemo. Different oncologists give different info regarding anti-oxidants during treatment. They also don't study nutrition (go figure) so you may want to put a Naturopathic doctor well schooled in cancer on your team because they DO study nutrition. I don't recommend a hospital dietician only because I personally have not had good experiences with them actually knowing HEALING nutrition.....not to knock any hospital dieticians out there, but if you look at what they serve you as food at hospitals then you really gotta wonder.....

As for purchasing a juicer now, the more greens you can get into yourself the better. Carrots have some wonderful colon-healing properties in them too. You will be helping to balance your pH through the raw alkalizing veggies. Chemo makes your body acidic (as do any drugs, anti-biotics etc), so ingesting as many alkalizing foods in an easy-to-assimilate way (the juicing) in my opinion (which I am not a professional), can only be beneficial. Your body does not have to do as much work digesting veggie juice which frees up more energy for your body to work on healing your cancer.

Are you doing adjuvant chemo? My onc wanted me to do adjuvant chemo of 5-FU and leucovorin which back in 2001 was the first line treatment for Stage III. Now it seems they bring out the big guns right away. My sister died of intestinal cancer after doing radiation and chemo and that scared the bejeezus out of me. I said NO THANK YOU and did it a different way. In 8 years I have not had one recurrence and my onc is one of my biggest cheerleaders. ( I just LOVE him!)

If you're going to invest in a juicer (which I hope you do--you won't be sorry), I assume you're going to do an overhaul on your diet too? I hope you will cut out all processed and sugary foods, abstain from alcohol, dairy and animal products as well (acid producing) and focus on a plant based diet while you heal your cancer. No sense in plunking all that money down and then running out for a Big Mac. HA! :-)

It pains me to no end to come on these boards and read of what folks eat and drink (and it's ok'd by their doctors) while they have either active cancer or are going through treatment. Sometimes I just can't open up the thread because my heart just sinks and my stomach turns in knots.

So happy day when I opened yours and it was wanting to know about juicing! YEA!

    I hope this helps.

    You will hear....
good things and bad things about chemo on this site. You will hear good things and bad things about Western medicine versus alternative medicine on this site. YOU need to decide if your trust your oncologist or if you need to seek another avenue. I would ask him all the questions you posted here. While alternative medicine and juicing may work for one individual, it may not work for another. We are not made alike.

My oncologist did refer me to a nutrionist. I have certain issues others do not. You may also. Nothing is carte blanc - I highly suggest you explore all avenues and work with your team to decide what is best for you.

    Blessed be...

    Thanks bunches
Emily, Thank you for the information. I am going to get a juicer in the next few days. My husband want the Omega one because he said it would juice leafy greens better, I just want to get started! It is an investment, but compared to what whe have spent so far it does not seem so great. I have had trouble with food since having my resection and need help even keeping my potassium level up. I want to be in the best possible shape before chemo and from what I read about juicing I think it will really help.

I will have chemo starting October 28, will have to lay off the antioxidants during chemo but will be trying detox stuff after it is over. I have a friend that is in remission from Hodgkins, she had chemo and radiation and she said it is the juice and detox through wheat grass that has helped her post chemo. I will take your advice and move towards nutritional helps.

    Thanks again,

    Glad to help!
GREAT! that your hubby is on board with this. Mine became one of my most constant juicers (I was juicing 3 quarts/day during my cancer healing time--now I'm on maintenance) so your hubby's input is important.

I think you'll be happy with the Omega. I know it's recommended highly on Dr. Mercola's website.

You might want to check out Kris Carr's website and blog on www.crazysexycancer.com or just google her. She has incurable cancer and has kept herself alive by going mostly raw and juicing (and a lot of wheatgrass too). She wrote a wonderfully funny and upbeat book by the same name--Crazy Sexy Cancer. Worth it for your cancer library IMO. :-)

    Keep me posted, hey?

    Emily....
...I bought Kris Carrs book and it was so inspiring, that this is what's getting me to want to get on board with the juicing. Do I do this during chemo or after? I have one more on Wednesday, my 12th treatment, but hope it isn't too late to do anything about at my stage, but that book did help. Everyone should read it.

    Hugsss!

    GO FOR IT GIRLFRIEND!!
    Doesn't the book just ROCK??!!

I don't know what to tell you about starting during the chemo but I don't know why it would be counterindicated--it's just great nutrition. It's food in a juiced form. Do oncologists tell you not to eat carrots or apples or spinach or celery? I wouldn't think so. ??

    Do it!

    I have....
....never spoken to my onc about nutrition, but I will on Wednesday and see what she says when I mention juicing and all that, and YES that book rocks! it really gives one hope that you can live longer eating like her, and just plain live and not let this cancer take you away, I loved the quotes from her friends, and it was just plain uplifting, with some great humor, and pictures. But I am going to start eating healthier! I want to just feel like I want to get out of bed already! I feel like I spend too much time laying around and not getting stuff done, it's scary feeling like you're half the person you used to be, I hate it, and will do something about it. :)

    Thanks for the encouragement!!!

    never tried it but...
I was just going to suggest a site I had heard about here - freecycle.org - you have to join the group, and then someplace put in your zip code. I joined the one here and have given plenty of stuff away - just maybe someone has one they bought and it is just collecting dust?

    Juice food
I will get the book and read it during all those wait times at the radiology department. Thank you

The oncologist said no antioxidants, I am not sure what that means, maybe white bread and water, and it has to be warm water-nothing cold. Yikes 'cause I really like veggies and I really like cold drinks. I will hopefully find out more,

I will be glad when all this starts because I feel kind of lost now.

    Hey Thready!
You will not be lost soon, you'll see that you will get through this :) We were ALL there where you are now, don't feel alone!

Yeah, if you are doing oxy, you will have a cold sensitivity for like 5 or 6 days I read from someone here after infusion, as you can't eat or drink anything cold, wear gloves when getting something out of the fridge, and in the refridgerated parts of the grocery store..in winters, wear a ski mask or hoodie to protect your face, I have read where people's eyes have frozen shut! scary! but supposedly if you drink something cold right after your chemo, it feels like glass going down your throat, so nuke everything before drinking and eating, I know it sucks not to have anything cold to drink, but it's only temporary, I have never had to use Oxy yet, I am on Folfiri, so they don't have those side effects, but who knows if they may put me on it, but anti-oxidants is something I don't know about either, I think some say yes, some say no, so not sure what to do about that.

Just do everything to stay warm as possible after infusion, and my prayers are with you, keep up on the nausea with anti-nausea meds (maryjane really helps as well ;) I take the anti-nausea meds even when I'm not nauseous, just so I don't get there...I take them every 5-6 hours, sometimes sooner...depends.

Hope you feel ok now, and have a great weekend!

    Hugsss!
