I just recently had my six month check-up by my medical oncologist. She tells me that she is moderately concerned about a scaly type growth on my left ear. As such, she refers me to a dermatologist.

I meet with the skin doc last week. He tells me that he is not overly concerned about the ear issue for whatever reason. He is more concerned about a mole on my cheek and one in the middle of my back. He takes tissue samples from all three sites for biopsy.

I get a call today from his office informing me that pathology indicates that the two locations that he was initially concerned about are benign. The ear however came back malignant for squamous cell carcinoma.

Because of the skin margins or lack thereof, he is referring me to a plastic surgeon for removal.

Has anybody else gone from head & neck to skin?

I don't know that this is something to be overly concerned about without meeting with the plastic's guy first.

It does concern me as I was hoping to continue to be in remission.

Thanks

Jim

Is this IN your ear or on the outside of your ear? If it's IN your ear, please see an ENT. Where do you live? I have squamous cell carconoma of the middle ear.

    Hi Lanative,

Since my post regarding my ear situation, I've had Mohs surgery to have it removed. It was on the outside. The Doc had to make three passes but got all of it on the third pass.

I'm betting that what I went through was considerably easier than what your faced with. How do they treat SCC of the middle ear?

Please share your treatment plan/schedule with us.

    Take care,

    Jim

I wonder if your ear would be classified as "skin" or as "head and neck?" Have you looked at this site: http://dermatology.cdlib.org/125/UCDcases/metastatic/wadhera.html

My trauma/drama? I started to answer here but it got very long and not sure how many others are really interested in it. Do you want me to send it to your personal email? The saga, and heartbreak, is that it's documented as being caused by misdiagnosed and mistreated otitis media over a period of time.

Missed part of your question. Sorry! I had surgery - removal of the outer and middle ear from behind the ear. Am deaf in ear of course and removal of partial temporal bone. Follwed by 6 weeks radiation. Have new facial and temporal bone pain that I'm dealing with. MRIs and CTs can't find the source for the pain. Continuing to look for that. Will also have to continue with regular scans. YOu can look at : http://www.earsurgery.org/site/pages/learn/ear-tumors/tumors-of-the-middle-ear.php or http://www.ispub.com/ostia/index.php?xmlFilePath=journals/ijorl/vol6n1/squamous.xml for some good general information and, again, I'll share my saga but hesitate as it is so long. Short form is lengthy misdiagnos and mistreatment of continued otitis media by more than one doc.

As a result I am hyper vigilent in telling people to ask for and demand, if necessary, a biopsy with anything that does not heal. First Aid 101 right? I left my concerns get laughed at and away.

    Be well.

    Ouch!
Sorry to hear about your trials and tribulations. FYI, the site offers on-site email to all who are members, as both of you are, since you are writing in the discussion area, if I am not mistaken.

The user name is simply the same name you see associated with the person's post. (Yours, for example, LANATIVE, is LANATIVE.) Note that upper- and lower-case are distinct. I could not send an email to you, LANATIVE, by sending it to lanative or Lanative.

The site discourages, or at least warns against, providng private email addresses so that people don't get snookered by the infrequent creeps that show up to take advantage of folks, not to suggest, certainly not to suggest, that you are.

    Hope this helps.

    Take care, and best wishes,

    Joe
