I'm very excited about having my port removed at 8:20 on Wednesday. I'm a little apprehensive because I don't want to SEE it being removed. Also, I wondered if you can feel the cath portion being pulled out of your arteries.

I'm not much of a nekkid dancer, so I'll just smile really big.

Anyone know about the questions/ concerns?

I just had posted about having mine removed with just a local. Sounds like that's how they are doing yours too. Let me know how it goes.

    Good Luck!
It will go quick, though, in the hospital, when they took my port out to see if it was infected, they put me under, I wouldn't want no local, but they didn't even ask, they just removed it. Then, a few days later when they put my new powerport back in, they put it on my left side this time, and I was out for that also, they have never mentione using any kind of local to do both of these procedures, I don't think I'd want to be awake to watch them either. Wishing you the best!

Had my port out last Thursday
    Hi Diane

The surgeon who put the port in removed it in his office with a local. Don't be afraid to ask for more numbing if you feel you need it. What I felt was the tugs of the incision and then the stitching. I didn't feel anything regarding the catheter coming out. I wore my Ipod too. I was sore for about a day or two and then yesterday the incision felt like just a cut healing. Today the steri- strips can come off. I'm so happy and relieved to have the port out and I'm sure you will be too.

    Good luck, Leslie

Michelle, I was Stage III so all known cancer was removed during surgery. Doctor says I was NED on Jan. 7th. I've completed my 12 rounds of chemo and don't go for blood tests til Dec. 15th. As long as that's good, I go for a scan in April. :o)

Thanks to the rest for well wishes and info!

Diane, I'm so happy to hear that things are going so well for you. You've been a big help to me with all your advise and pearls of wisdom.

Just to let you know, I'm on round 4 now..get the pump taken away tomorrow. Round 3 I was sick as a dog, nothing they were giving me worked. They started me on Emend Monday and it seems to be doing the trick this time. No nausea when I woke up this morning and as long as I keep something in my stomach, things seem okay. Tomorrow will be the teller I guess.

Our local Gilda's Club has started a support group for colon cancer. I was able to attend the first meeting and it seems like it's going to be a really interesting group.

My surgeon told me that they can do the port removals in the office, but he likes to do it in the hospital. Better lights and they have more equipment in case it's needed. I'm sure they'll give you something to relax you...just don't be looking at what they're doing. That will make you more anxious. :-)

    Good luck with it!!!

I haven't had my port removed. I will probably leave it in for a good while "just in case". I hope all goes well tomorrow and congratulations on this great step in your recovery.

    Hi again, Diane
As reported last week, DH had his port removed on Friday. A local was all they used-it was done in the hospital Out Patient Center, he was awake. Said the only thing that was somewhat uncomfortable was the injection of the novacaine or the numbing. He got 3 injections. He felt some pressure as it was being removed. Has stitches on the inside that will disolve, and only steri-strips on the outside holding the incision together. The removal incision was the same as the one they used to insert the port.

He did just kinda baby his arm (right)that day, but was fine the next day. He babied it cause he didn't want any bleeding to be a problem. No problem. So glad to have that port removed. I'm sure yours will be as fine. Good luck

    FREAKY
Well, it's out. There was no pain. Some bleeding onto the gauze. The sounds of the scissors clicking and the tugging sensation was freaky. I'm quite a tough cookie, watched hubby's 30 surgeries for skin cancer and melanocytic changes (pre-melanoma) plus have helped in open heart surgeries and obtained blood during an autopsy but the mere thought of something being yanked out of MY chest was weird. They showed me the port and it was much smaller than it felt. There was skin or something hanging on it. FREAKY LOLOLOL

It's over and done with! Boy am I glad!
