I have a colonoscopy this Thursday and I have an ostomy at the sigmoid...I think that I got a response before but I need to know others opinion about how they go through the prep part of it. Im not really sure about what to expect and how to deal with it in a healthful manner...Thanks...

    Been there, done that. The
Been there, done that. The only thing different with the prep was I hooked on a looooooooong bag, think it was the one for enemas? You probably can get one if you don't have one from the doctor's office. Use a couple of bath towels as well, toward the end it was all liquid and tended to leak at the connection.

I was at a hotel across the street from Mayo- was laughing with my sister about the mess people must leave in the hotel rooms.

I thought it was interesting- you are on your back, they can and do go through the stoma, then go up and around. Didn't realize it was even possible. The surgeon actually did mine- colorectal surgeons tend to want to do their own colonoscopy. She told me later that she went in at the stoma site, up and around. Then had me on my side and went through the back end up to the staples.

Actually thought the prep was easier for that colonoscopy then for others. No running to the bathroom, just sitting and waiting for the bag to fill.

    I'm.....
....so glad you asked this question Buzz, I have been thinking the same thing for awhile, if they ever wanted to do another colonoscopy, how they did it when you have a bag?? I couldn't imagine all that liquid going in my lil bag, and trying to empty it every 5 minutes, that would drive me nuts!

Thanks for that reply Patteee, I didn't even know they were even able to go through the stoma site, wow, thank god they knock you out for this stuff.

Good luck with the prep and exam Buzz, I hope everything comes out great! you'll be in my prayers!

    Hugsss!

    No prep
When i went in to have a colonoscopy when i still had my ileostomy, i didn't have to prep at all. It sounds like you guys are getting it done through the stoma, though. I didn't know they did that, though i knew they could. It must be different for everyone depending on whether or not you still have a large intestine, or if the rectum has been shown shut. I don't know why they do that. Colonoscopies would be so much easier.

    did that
    Hi Buzz
I had one done through my stoma. Had to go on clear liquid diet before, then nothing the day before, the nurse that did the prep was very good, flushed me out through the stoma, then I was put out for the scope. Had no problems with it. Hope yours goes well.

    I had it
done through the stoma before having my resection surgery of colon. I did the Golytely (gallon) prep, but what helped me was the low residue diet I am put on for about 3 days, which helps with emptying out your insides, but it does get messy.

I basically would lean over the toilet and empty my bag and like said above, it does get messier towards the end when it is just liquid.

Good luck and let us know the outcome.

    OK.......
I am suppose to do 3 small bottles of Mag citrate (only 2 if it clears up) thats it. Although I know there is a lot more to it than "thats it" but I am assuming that I am to do nothing other than drink the liquid as told on my prep sheet and nothing after Midnight...I thought about laying on 2 sawhorses and staying out in the middle of the 180 acres and flushing there. I don't really think I would have any problems with anything wanting to attack...Maybe some "buzzards" flying over the next morning. OK then, thanks everyone and I'll let ya know the outcome when I get home unless I forget...

and Krista......the answer to your question is yes I have been sewn shut back there so its one way in and one way out...(the good thing about that are there is no more rectal exams)

    colonoscopy
I have a permanant colostomy, and when I did my colonoscopy I used 2 bags,I put 1 on while I emptied the other, otherwise the fluid would come gushing out while I was emptying the first bag. They entered thru the stoma and I had no problems, and slept thru it.

I had to do a liquid diet
I had to do a liquid diet 24+ hours before prep- then did golyte by the gallon. I can't imagine they don't want you on liquids before the Mag citrate?

    Liquid tomorrow......
even though I am not on a liquid diet tomorrow I think just coffee will suffice me...I wanna make it simple for myself so I don't have to repeat.....
