In the morning my wife and I head up to Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tn for my appointment for the DaVinci Surgery with Dr. Smith at the controls. Tomorrow is spent with all the hospital pre-op questions, tests, forms etc. Wednesday morning at 6am I actually check into the hospital with surgery scheduled to begin at 9am. Seems like I have been waiting forever since I was diagnosed back in April. But I used the time wisely exploring my options (Explored radiation, seed implants and surgery), talking to Doc's, reading prostate cancer books and of course getting support from you on this forum and other forums.

I have one final question for you...does the Robot like Roses or chocolates since its a first date? I hope they knock me out good so I don't remember if the Doctor starts yelling "BAD ROBOT!" LOL. Also if R2D2 or C3PO shows up in the surgery suite I'm canceling the date!

At any rate, see you guys on the other side when I'm sure I'll be asking those that have gone before all the other type questions.

Thanks again for all your support. I'll post something on how it all went at some point post surgery. If all goes as planned they will discharge me Thursday with that souvenir called the catheter.

Larry

    PSA
Thanks for the information and I hope you are feeling better.

Did you have a biopsy when your PSA was 5.1? I thought they waited until PSA was 10+ to biopsy. Was there a reason for this or just a preference on your part? When my PSA was 4.9, my regular doctor didn't think I needed to go to a urologist.

    Actualy my biopsy was done
Actualy my biopsy was done when my PSA was 4.3. My father was treated for prostate cancer at age 67 so with the family history the doc was more concerned. I did an antiboidic pill for one week to rule out infection, They retested and it was at 4.6 so I agreeded to the biopsy and that is when they found cancer in 5 of the 12 samples. Our church had a health screen about 1 month later so I paid out of pocket to have the psa done the third time and that was when it had gone to 5.1.

My mother was also treated for Breast Cancer two years ago and Vanderbilt told me there are studies out where if your dad has prostate cancer and mom has breast cancer it puts you in higher risk.

By the way my dad is doing great 12 years post treatment for his cancer and mom my is doing well two years post her breast cancer treatment.

    Biopsy
My father also had PC but at age 75. He survived for another 13 years and never had any problem with PC again. He had an aeortic aneurism later. Having known my father's history, my general doctor probably should have referred me to the urologist a year sooner.
In the end, the operation in April was a success and my PSA is minimal, less than 0.1.
