Question regarding bleeding

After a bowel movement this morning, I started bleeding bright red blood. This has happened once or twice before but never to this extent, usually just bleed when I have the movement, but I have been bleeding now for about an hour. I have had hemorrhoid surgery that supposedly removed all the veins in the rectum that could cause hemorrhoids again, so I don't think it is that. Also, this bowel movement was very easy, no straining at all. I go back to see my onc tomorrow, is this something I should share?
I have stage IV colon cancer without having a colonoscopy or removal of any of my colon.

    yes
yes, definitely something you should share with oncologist! I would also recommend going to the ER today, especially if you continue to bleed.

    Please go to the ER
Several of our friends here have had their colon burst. I'm certainly no expert, but I would think this type bleeding should be checked out immediately.

Praying for you (if that's okay)

    I was thinking anal fissures
I was thinking anal fissures at first, but then kept re-reading and saw where you said an hour, so that does not sound right...I'm going to agree with everyone else, a trip to the ER sounds right.

I'm late to the post, so hopefully this is what happened. I'm sorry it happened, Debbbie...when you are up to it, please let us know how things went and what the cause was.

    Thank you...take care

    Been to the ER?
Hope you have gone to the ER by now. When I was diagnosed with colon cancer (Stage 1), it was because I had an episode of sudden, copious bleeding. My doctor admitted me immediately to the hospital and told me to absolutely NOT even go by home (5 min. from hospital) to get anything.

    *hugs*

    ER
I believe that you should go to the ER. This does not sound normal especially if it had continued an hour. I had a slight amount of blood on stool which sent me to the doctor, you sound like you have a lot. Please go get it checked out.

    Bleeding
I wanted to thank everyone for their concern. I did not go to the ER because by the time I read the comments, I had stopped bleeding. It has taken me so long to answer because Monday was my chemo day and I was wiped out on Tuesday and most of today.
On Monday I saw the doctor. He said because it was bright red blood, the blood was for the lower rectum and said it must be an internal hemorrhoid that I didn't know about. The prolonged bleeding was because I am on Avastin and have a low (not too low) platelet count. He gave me some cream and said to watch it. I have not had any bleeding since Sunday.

    Thanks again,
    Debbie

This is my opinion, don't listen to that doctor, insist on getting scoped. My main cancer symptom was anal bleeding; bright red, and lots of it. At first it would come and go, then became all the time. For years the doctors told me it was internal hemmorhoids. They said they could feel them during rectal exams. Well, what they were feeling was a tumor, and two years later, i got the diagnosis. I don't want to worry you that it could be a recurrence, but you just don't know, and neither do the doctors until they actually look. It is possible that you tore something inside somehow, but again, you just don't know. I'm seeing blood again in my stool, and i'm panicking about it. I'm getting scoped on the 14th. I think you should do the same. In our position, we can't be too careful.

I wish you much luck, and please keep us posted!

    I totally agree
I totally agree with Krista. Don't take the doctor's word that they think it might be an internal hem. That's what my doctor thought too and it was rectal cancer only found by a colonscopy. Please go have it tested out more thoroughly. You will feel better too because it is probably nothing, but something they can take care of easily.

    All In Favor...Yes
    Hi, Debbie

In my earlier post to you on this topic, I thought it might be anal fissures - but as I kept reading it over and over, the length of time concerned me, so I agreed with going to the hospital at that time.

After I read Krista's comments, the lightbulb in my head went off - and I'm going to have to agree with her and Kim on having a colonoscopy.

Krista - your story sounds so similiar to mine, that it brought a chill down my spine reading your post. That's exactly what was happening to me too! I would have bad BM's and horrible bloody stools - blood was sometimes red and sometimes crimson or a mix of the two.

And like you, it would last for awhile and then the bleeding would stop (multiple BM's did not). Then a period of time would go by and the bleeding would start again - this cycle repeated over and over. I had never been sick before - our house and our lives had just been destroyed by an F-3 tornado, and we lost everything we owned - and I was in a high stress job with a bad boss making my life miserable.

Then, you combine that with a bad doctor - like Krista said, he continually wrote it off to hemhorroids - he told me, "they bleed all the time and people live with them all the time."
He hated doing a rectal exam, just grossed him out or something. And he would come back with the same thing Krista said, it was hemhrroids, when in fact he was probably feeling the tumor.

3 years went by before I could get a referral to a GI for a colonoscopy - at that point he revealed that I had colorectal cancer.

His medical incompetence has cost me 5 years worth of pain and suffering - I'm into year 6 of my battle and things could have been different if I could have gotten a referral - I was an HMO at the time and only 40 and was only referred after a rectal exam where the smear revealed blood - he got me quickly out of his office right after that - the look on his face - he knew that he had blown it.

That story rings so close to home, Krista - deja vue.

Debbie - please consider getting this done - better safe than sorry. Click on my avatar name and read my story. If my life means anything from enduring what I've gone through - it is to be able to help someone else so they do not have to go through that as well. So, please?

Wouldn't a tumor, even in the rectum, have shown on my CT in July?

    Perhaps
    Debbie

It should if it were large enough to be detected. The scans can only detect to a certain degree and beyond that, it is merely speculation. I understand what you are asking me, but I remember hearing it is only hemhorroides - and yours may certainly be, but a scope would tell you that and then you know for sure.

They did not catch mine on the CT 6 months after surgery and the colonoscopy exam did find the tumor in nearly the same spot at the resect point - and it was precancerous. So go figure there.

I've paid a heavy price down there and I just think it's better for a physical procedure just to make sure. The all clean verdict would be a big relief and eliminate the guessing.

I don't want to do it either, but I don't want to even get close again, because the next time it could be a colostomy for me - and I've worked real hard to avoid that and have been blessed.

    Just my opinion

    Bleeding Problem
My Dad who had rectal surgery in mid-June and two rounds of chemo since then is also having bleeding issues. The blood does not come in high volume, but once a while he will find blood in the paper wipes he uses. I did not think of scope as an option at this point, since he had surgery only two months ago. But everyone's advice reminds me that it is better to be safe than sorry.
