ANy thoughts on taking Vit D, I have heard that it really helps with your immune system, energy and moods. I watched an infomercial about it and heard a doc talking about it on a radio show, how so many people are have low Vit D levels. My Partner also said that Fish oil was good for me too. WEll I decided to go ahead and get them and try them for a month. I figure it cant hurt. Just wanted some thoughts on it...

Thanks in advance..
Beth

    Vit D & Fish
    Beth,

That was the first thing my Dr. did was to put me on Vit D, as yes my levels were low...no dah we only live where there is little sun. Anyway I did feel better after my Vit D level came to a normal level, and it really helps with not only the immune system, but depression, or feeling blue.

I eat ALOT of fish, always have, but I am not much of a meat eater, so fish is my alternative. I have never tried just fish oil, but I think I eat enough fish to take care of that as it is.

    Vitamin D
    Beth,

They have now linked low vitamin D levels with colon canzer and canzer recurrences. They minimum recommendation is 2000 IU's a day. I take much more to keep my levels up, but I have a malabsorption issue and don't live in sunny Arizona! Vitamin D also is needed to absorb calcium and chemo and radiation both deplete your body of that and increase your risk for osteoporosis. Get your Vit D levels checked if you haven't done that and you want to be at the high end of normal.

    me too
i agree get your levels checked. I asked for them to check mine and the oncologist balked but my family practitioner was happy to oblige and mine were very low- i have to take 50,000 Iu's weekly for 2 months and then get rechecked. My family members got their checked as well and were very low. Not only do adequate levels help prevent cancer and cancer recurrences, but they also can help prevent diabetes, chronic pain, heart disease, osteoporois, and Multiple Sclerosis among other things.

    Hi Beth,
When **** went for his initial consult with Dr. Lenz (USC) he put him on Vit. D. He also writes about Vit D and many other cc topics on his blog. Here's the link to his blog.

    I'm on vitamin D spray
    Hi Beth,

I'm sure you remember that I talked about vitamin D a few weeks ago. For everyone else's info, a "normal" vitamin D level is 32-100. When I was tested, even though I live in sunny southern California and am in the sun a lot, my level was just at 13. I read somewhere online that many people with colon problems don't absorb vitamin D well. I wondered if that was my problem, because I had already been taking vitamin D supplements, although probably not enough. I recently started taking a vitamin D spray that you spray under your tongue. It is supposed to be very easily and readily absorbed. Lo and behold, just two weeks later I was tested again and my vitamin D level went up that quickly to a 33. It was tested again just a few days ago and is a 34.

    Vit D
All three of my docs - oncologist, radiation doc and general practitioner all said to check Vit D levels. I was at '28' which is a little low, so I take (or should take - sometimes I forget) a supplement - along with calcium, which was recommended due to age and having gone through radiation.

I live in the northwest, but have only been here 4 years. I grew up in sunny AZ and spent a fair amount of time outside, so I certainly can't blame my cancer on low vitamin D levels - I'm sure I got plenty the first 40+ years of my life.

    Taking Vit D
My internal medicine/naturopath has me on 10,000 units vit D daily (evening) and monitors my blood for proper levels. Also fish oil up to 6 grams/day.

Believe me I came from a very sunny place, very warm and thought that the weather here sounded grand, since it was milder, not as hot. Even though I love the area we live in I never realized how much I would miss the sun, and the rain absolutely drives me crazy, I never thought I would hear myself say I miss the snow, except of all times to get hit with a bad snow storm was when I was going through treatment and we were snowed in.

We also have to deal with huricane force winds occassionally, flooding etc.... Take it from me no matter where you live there are always things that we just have to put up with.
