My husband was treated at MD Anderson. In my opinion that is the place you need to be. You need someone with their expertise and someone who does that volume. Are you having colorectal surgery?

Just to make you feel better...
MD Anderson is rated the #1 cancer hospital in the United States. That should make you feel a whole lot better. I had my work done at Vanderbilt and you couldn't ask for a better hospital and its rated at 14th, so you might see now what to expect.....I would say miracles ......God Bless ya'll and Good Luck

    It is great
I recently found out about my cancer. I'm on my third chemo now. Md Anderson is very highly rated and go out of their way to be understanding and comfortable, as far as patient care is concerned. The oncologist made sure every test was run, all CT scans, even has a 2nd set run because I had brain tumors 3 1/2 years ago. All this was done BEFORE she made a decision on what kind of chemo I would be on and the schedule. They ask me every time about my side effects and they do not "blow it off" and act like it's nothing. I go to the MD Anderson on NASA Rd.1, it's only 3 miles from where I live, so it's very convenient. The downtown main campus of MD Anderson has so many programs, I believe for free, that it is a wonderful patient oriented place...not always the "just give us the money,I don't have time for you" kind of place. I wish you the best and MD Anderson is a great place.

    Colorectal surgery
Yes - I am actually having the colorectal surgery here in KC MO with my surgeon that recommended me to MD Anderson for the liver resection. After visiting MD Anderson, I was very pleased. They are very good. Now I just have to get through the liver resection surgery in April. I am having that one Houston.

Hi, neighbor. We live in Lee's Summit. Where are you having your surgery? I had mine at Lee's Summit. Who's your surgeon? My surgeon was Cameron. He had previously taken out my gall bladder. He's supposed to be one of the best.

I think you made a good decision to have the colorectal surgery locally and the liver resection at MD Anderson. I've heard nothing but good things about them. Have you read "Bigger Than Pink: The Book I Could Not Find When I Was Diagnosed With Stage Four Cancer'? It's by Lori Lober, with Lara Moritz (from Channel 9). Lober went to MD Anderson for her breast cancer treatments. She founded the Touched by Cancer Foundation.

Did you check out the possibility of your colorectal surgery at MD Anderson also?
My husband had his there almost 3 years ago. If the tumor is located low and the surgery is intricate, you may want to check them out. They treat such a large volume. We were very impressed with the whole thing.

    surgeries
I am having the rectal with colostomy done next Tuesday in KC MO at St Joseph's. My tumor embedded itself deep in the muscle very low in the rectum. And then the liver resection in Houston on April 9. They are removing 2/3 of the liver so they wanted to do the surgeries seperate.

The liver surgeon we met with, Steven Curley, recommended we stay with my surgeon here because she has high reviews, recover and then head to Houston. I wish we could do both - one recovery time. But he has to take 2/3 of the liver so he wanted me to recover first.

I'm not going to second guess your surgeons, but I had my colon and liver resected at the same time. I had about 70% of my liver taken, about as much as they are willing to take. This was in July 08. The surgery lasted 13 hours, ICU for 4 days, 3 days reg hosp, Then out the door with an iliostomy that had to be fixed later in August. I had my surgery done at an MD Anderson affiliated cancer center in Spartanburg SC. If you're in good health, I might would try and press for a combo surgery. Either way MD Anderson is the way to go. If you get a chance ask Dr. Curley how the Kanzius research is going. He possibly has the cure to our cancer in his office, we won't be able to get it for a few years, so just ask if they can keep you alive until then.
