New diagnosis UPSC - Please help

Dear all,

I am writing on behalf of my mother Belinda. She was recently diagnosed with Level 3C UPSC. She is in her early 50's, presented NO symptoms and was diagnosed just a month ago with this terrible decease. We are from the Dominican Republic, and we've been in Miami for this whole procedure. She is just one week removed from surgery and has her first appointment with the oncologist next thursday to talk about the quimioteraphy.

During these past couple of weeks I have tried to do everything to help my mother overcome her psycological barrier. She used to be an energetic and active woman, and now she is always depressed, in pain and defeated. I am very worried because we haven't even started the hardest part yet and she is considering giving up without a fight.

I was so lucky to have found this message board and reading your stories. I quickly told my mother about your discussion board and how many of you are supporting each other. I want to let her know that she is not alone in this. I am trying to convince her to join in and connect with you girls but she is so depressed that she won't do it.

I don't know what else to do, and I know that a lot of you can share your experience with her and maybe give her some HOPE and something to look forward to. If maybe you could write her a personal email and ask her to join, maybe share a message and let her feel that she is not alone and that you have all been through this.     I'm so glad to see you are supporting your Mom and trying to get her to find support. It is wonderful to be able to vent your fears, worries and experiences with wonderful women who are going through this too! I will e-mail you Mom and ask her to join us.

    I am exhausted tonight but will email your mother tomorrow. I am Stage III-C also, and my oncologist is going all out for a cure for me and believes I have a very good prognosis. Your mother mustn't dispair; there is always hope, and justifiable hope. Her depression and shock is something we all felt in the early days. But she needs to get her fighting spirit as quickly as she can. She needs the chemo and radiation that is ahead of her.

    Please read our long long long thread with the hundreds of posts, even though it is long and will take you a long time. Maybe even read it to her like a storybook. She'll see what we can be for her. She'll see that people SURVIVE this, and that the treatment itself is do-able and not near as bad as you imagine it will be. She is very lucky to have you. Everyone going through this needs a 'rock' to cling to. That's you.

    Willie, your Mother is lucky to have you for support. My daughter found this discussion board for me, and I have learned so much and have gotten so much encouragement from everyone. I too have UPSC Stage 3C. I am 60 years old and have had only one chemo treatment so far. So I am early in the treatment plan. The grieving process your Mother is going through is normal. Everyone takes their own time to get through the process. I agree with Linda that you could read the posts to your Mother until she is ready to read them herself. I spent two days reading everything, but it was certainly worth the time. I felt so much better after reading from people who have completed the treatment and are moving on with their life.
