Just for some FUN

Hey ALL,

I thought it might be interesting to find out what everyone does for a living. Kind of like what we did when we asked everyone where they are from. So I will go first.

I am currently employed by the Department of Homeland Security, I work for Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) formerly known as INS. I am a Supervisory Detention and Deportation Officer. I supervise all aspects of Deportation proceedings and removals from the United States and supervise detention of people that are illegally in the United States. I have been doing this for over 8 years now. I love my job, I know alot of people hate what I do, but I believe its needed. There is a right way to come into the United States and if you do it the right way well then you wont see me, but do it the wrong way and you might just come get to meet me.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

    I am a Shift Operations Supervisor at USTVA and have been employed there for 25 years. I am 54 years old and was looking forward to retiring at 55. Not any more, with young children and this little deal I will continue to work til the cows come home and thats ok also.I love my job although it sometimes has its moments as they all do. I have been blessed with a good living and the ability to care for and give my family a great comfortable life..........

    Should be interesting
    I'll go next, though mine is not very fascinating, and i've done many things. I will go with the more recent stuff. Before i got sick, i was working as a caregiver for psychiatric patients, and before that with people who were moderately to severely brain injured. I also cleaned houses, and had my own business for several years. I loved it, and unfortunately, i'll never be able to work in either of those fields again. The work was hard, so i won't complain!

    Well, I'm currently on Long Term Disability Insurance and have been for 2 years now. But, my employer and fellow employees still treat me as if I'm one of them (IE: I get invited to the Christmas party or any potluck lunches they may have, the going away or retirement parties, etc). I worked as a Systems Analyst/IT Instructor for the Ministry of Social Services for the Province of BC (British Columbia provincial government). I have been with the provincial government for 35 years (ok, I started when I was 2 years old??). One can retire on full pension after 35 years of service but you have to be 55. Since I'm only 53, I can't retire until February 2010. When the time comes, I will have to weigh the odds as to whether it's better to stay on Long Term Disability or retire and go on full pension. With Long Term Disability, the insurance company pays my medical, extended health and dental insurance, but I can't work on the side. If I retire, my medical insurance is paid for, but I would have to pay my own Extended Health and Dental insurance (at subsidized rates), but there would be no restriction on working... part-time or full-time.

    So, I'll have to figure it all out, but hey... I have another year to figure it out ... meanwhile, I continue popping into the office and giving them all a hard time. My employer (and co-workers) have been soooo supportive of me throughout all of this!

    PS: Meanwhile... I'm still very much active with the Vancouver Theatre Community... and that definitely keeps me busy, so it's not like I'm sitting around feeling sorry for myself or getting bored :)

    I bet we'll get a whole host of different things here! I am a computer programmer, employed with the same company since August of 1992 (very rarely do programmers stick with the same company for more than 5 years). I have a great boss, although today is one of those days I would like to throttle him! Before that I managed the library and worked in the mail room at TRICCSMA in Newport, RI. Before that I was a purchasing agent at a beer distributor in Charleston. Before that I did temp work at various places, and before that did inventory with RGIS in Jacksonville FL. I'm not going any further back than that!

    Beth, I publish two magazines for the machine quilting industry - Unlimited Possibilities for professional longarm quilters, and Machine Quilting Unlimited for the home machine quilter. It is great fun! You can see then on my websites, www.upquiltmag.com or www.mqumag.com. Next summer, if the beast can be tamed, we are launching an Art Quilt magazine. That is my passion...

    Hi there,

    I sell computer hardware and software that is specific to the graphics industry. My clients include ad agencies, pre-media houses and printers. Interesting and sometimes stressful work but overall has been a great industry to be involved with. My employer has been awesome since I started going through this. I found out about the colon cancer two months after I started.

    What I do...
    I founded and have operated a PR agency starting in 1982. Before that, I was PR manager for Johnson Outboards, i taught journalism at a state university right before that. I'm a frustrated journalist, so we also produce a newspaper feature service and produce and syndicate two radio programs. We specialize in outdoor recreation and automotive. Before I started the agency, I was PR manager for the consumer products at Armour-Dial. Products such as Dial Soap, toiletries, Bruce Cleaning products, shampoos, etc. Great products, but not as much fun as boats, motors, fishing tackle, and Toyota Lexus and Scion automobiles.

    I love what I do. Mary, my wife, and Pete, my son, are in the agency with me. My daughter, Penny, is a serious newsie and a senior copy editor at the Arizona Republic newspaper.

    I'm also a retired U.S. Navy officer.

    What a great and interesting group we have, how about us!

    healthcare for 28 years
    I have worked in Health Care for 28 years, I was a Respiratory Therapist for about ten years then I completed my Masters in Heatlh Care Administration and started with the Veterans Administration hospital system. I have worked in seven different facilities and in Alaska, California, Missouri, Washington, Texas and now I am back home in Arizona. I have recently started a new job, still with VA in the area of health care planning and emergency preparedness.

    Its been different after all these years to be the patient myself. I have to admit when I was an inpatient, I actually was intrigued by the experience because it was my field. I have 23 years of federal service now and need to get to at least 56 before full retirement. I really like the veterans and believe in what we do. I am now a patient there too.

    Career
    I work as an independent contractor in educational sales. Basically, I recruit working professional adults to go back to college online at major colleges and universities like: Indiana State University, Regis University, USC, Indiana U, George Washington U, and others.
    I specialize in healthcare - nursing, paramedic to RN, respiratory therapists. I love what I do but it requires long hours and lots of driving (50,000+ miles a year on my car for business) that I just can not do anymore. I am working very part time and have applied for disability. In the 16 mos since diagnosis, this is the toughest. I really LOVE working and giving it up is hard.

    My background is workforce development. I have worked with welfare-to-work, adults with disabilities, dislocated workers and ex-felons to get them back in the workforce and/or more education.

    My plan now is to be off work until I can get this stupid disease to leave me alone and then start my own business. I'm 44, my youngest is a junior in high school and I will have to give up the job I love...seems like it's perfect timing for a career change! Maybe consultant work?

    I have been repairing industrial and domestic sewing machines for 45 years. My only break was as a senior computer operator with the Australian dept of defence computing services division ,10 years of rolling shifts. Ron.

    I am a high school teacher in CA. This is year 23 for me as a biology, physics and technology teacher. I also am the 18 co-director of the Ca Science Project at UCSB. I have been a volleyball coach (girls and boys) over the last 18 years as well. Its a great job and I love the school and kids.

    House cleaner
    Me next-

    I raised three kids as a single mom cleaning houses and any other part time Job I could find. I worked 2-3 jobs most of my childrens lifes. 2 years ago I was let go at this time of the year from a managing position. Then my husbands brother died and I became partially retired doing only 1 house w eek to give me an outing.As of september I had to give it up I can barley do my own home without getting very tired or being in pain. Still waiting on a Dx for whatever I have. ANd plan on working once I get better as I am totally unisured.

    I've worked full time for a high school in Ca for the past 8 years. I am the technology specialist for the campus. I love my job and the students. It's always a challange to figure out what went wrong with the computers this time. I also ran an in-home day care for 15 years when I was raising my 4 kids. They are all either in college or married now. I'm 52.

    I'm an attorney. I work full time as in house counsel for a bank, which is painful & busy right now with the state of the economy. I also have my own practice which I do part time mainly concentrating on real estate, civil law, family law and estate planning. I also do co-counsel work with my brother who is an attorney practicing primarily in real estate title insurance defense, real estate closings and civil law and he also dabbles in criminal law with my husband who is also an attorney. I've heard every lawyer joke imaginable.

    I also wear the hat of caretaker for my mom, my most important and favorite role.

    I forgot
    I was in the Navy for 8 years as well. I worked as a Radioman Second Class (E-5). LOved it, should have stayed in but I have a job I love as well so it all worked out!

    One day I am going to make my way to see your wonderful Country. I have traveled all over the world, the closest I got was Fiji. But one day I will make it there!

    Hardest Job
    I think teachers have the hardest jobs these days! They dont get paid near enough to do the job they do and have the responsibilities that are put on them. God Bless ya

    My Dream Job
    My dream is to one day be an attorney. I work with attorney's on a daily basis (well when I was working) I love dicussing the law with them. Love it even better when I prove them wrong..LOL I always have said I might be the oldest person to ever take a bar exam but some day it will happen. People ask me what I would do if I won the lottery, I would go back to school and become a lawyer. But for now, its being a LEO!
