Hi wondering if anyone has had this type of issue. I am stage IV, tumors in my colon and in the perotenium muscles outside the colon. I have sever pain associated with gas that is bringing me to my knees. This goes on 20 hours per day and some days is so bad, I have had trouble getting out of bed.

has anyone had this kind of issue or any suggestions on easing the gas pain? I assume it is in part to the tumors in the colon but honestly the pain goes away when the gas is released, the problem is, it only lasts for one 30 seconds at the most.
Mark.

    Hi Mark,

I would agree with Katie. Talk to you doctor. I know that gas is a problem with me sometimes and pain but not as severe as you. There are medicines that help gas and maybe one would work for you. Also, do you keep a food diary? Maybe you can track the food that might be causing the gas? Sorry you are going through so much also. Pain is so debilatating. HUGS and tell us what happens.

I'm so sorry to hear this Mark...
Gosh, Mark...it really sucks you are dealing with so much.

Have you chatted with your doctor about this? Maybe your GI doc can give you some help? And I'm wondering if your symptoms worsen when you eat or drink or if it's a constant pain all the time.

At this point, all I can think of is let it out...kids may get a giggle from it, and at least gives you a little momentary bit of relief.

How about a little comic relief? Check this out...turn up the volume!

    Pain from gas
The only time I had pain from gas was due to being totally obstructed which lead to emergency surgery which lead to Stage II. It was small tumor, but apparently totally obstructed my colon.

I took Gas X, they have me IV infusions of Go-Lytley, etc in the ER and nothing worked.

Mark, like you don't have enough pain already? I am so sorry this is happening to you. I know the 5FU-Leucovorin treatments gave me tremendous amounts of gas, I carried tums around with me 24/7 but the only time i had debilitating gas with it was when i had diarrhea as well. Definitely ask your onc for something that can help. I know Reglan(sp?) helps gas move through the intestines, are you having problems moving it through or is it just the volume of gas? The idea of a food diary is a good one, maybe some of your food is increasing the amount of gas. The only time I had really bad pain in my intestines was when a tumor was growing and the pain was spasming of my intestines as stool tried to pass the tumor that was almost completely obstructing. Prayers for a decrease of your pain and an increase in your pleasure in life (what a cute kid!). Mary

I would guess from the two posts that it is the growing tumor and the stint that is trying to hold open the blockage. My mom who is visiting just yelled across the room " tell em you are also making stinkey ones too" Man I love my mom. Thanks for your suggestions. I thihk i will start a journey. usually it starts immediatly after i eat. anything.

    Hi Mark,
Sorry to hear about your discomfort. You probably are having some partial obstruction which causes some buildup of the gas. Have you tried any simethicone to try to absorb some of the gas? It might also help to eat frequent small amounts of food. Hopefully they don't have to replace the stents but talk to your doctor about the problem.

    Lomotil?
My radiation oncologist recommended Lomotil for gas, as well as for diarrhea. I think he said to take a double dose, and he made a dramatic collapsing gesture with his hands and said "Whoosh" to show the effect. I just took it for diarrhea, so I can't say from experience how well it works for gas.

    Severe pain from gas
    Mark,
I'm so sorry about the pain your in. My experience was severe gas before and after colon resection, pretty much constant like you said, debilitating at times. Everyone's advice was walking helps (yea right). I was told by my ONC no raw vegetables until the gas went away. Today 8 months out, I do eat raw veg. some, but I do always have gas afterward. Try Beano before, sometimes it helps sometimes not. I hope and pray it's not your tumor growing. You have my prayers!

    OH NO...
I can't get your link on the ship, but PLEASE tell me you didn't send him the Two and a Half Men clip; "Bakin' air biscuits. Get 'em while they're hot!" did you? I know when I saw that clip I laughed so hard I "made some stinkys"!

    You know me too well...
SB...Sorry you can't watch the video at sea, but it's probably a good thing, lest you once again laugh so hard you create a combustible condition in the confined space that is your stateroom on the ship. I'm not sure your "stinkys" are OSHA rated for confined spaces...I do know for certain that I give them one gasp, three gags and a clamp on the nose. Now that we've gone public with your excessive carbon footprint hopefully we won't get a barrage of hate mail from Leo and Al Gore...

I am on the IBS diet....
After many, many moments of torture, I resigned myself to the fact that many foods that are good for me, also put me in pain. Peppers, any color, are guaranteed to bloat me up. Tomato-based stuff (sigh, I LOVE a good bowl of tomatoe soup...).

I changed my diet, and it seems much better. This didn't happen overnight, Mark...my colon was still VERY suspicious...

I eat beef only once or twice a month, and cut EXTREMEMLY back on my dairy (lactose intollerant, as it turns out, as a result of the chemo....). Also, for some reason, keeping my fluid intake up seems to help.

I have been thinking about you alot....and sending you prayers everyday....

    BIG, SLOPPY HUGS,

    Gastro Doc
    Hi there,

I have all sorts of gas problems since treatment. I am going to see Gastro doc to see what his recommendations are. Probably a change of diet. We shall see.
