I dont know where to start. My brother inlaw just went through surgery to see about taking part of his stomach and esoph. out and they closed him up and said that the cancer has metastisised to his liver with several legions. Stage four. He's leaking alot of fluid from his wound and has lost thirty pounds within a three week period. Does anyone have any tips for me?? any similar situations. This is so painful for our family and to see what my brother has to deal with.

So sorry to hear about your bro in law - you may have seen postings from other stage 4 folks in here with successful stories of coping and surviving through EC. Do not give up hope and do not stop supporting and being there for him for a long, long time. Going through the surgery & TX with my husband I saw how important support & love was from family and friends and the power of prayer or positive thoughts (for those not inclined to "prayer") gave us great comfort. You & your family will be in mine and we all will be here to provide a spot where you can share thoughts and emotions as you need to. My best to you, your family and your bro in law.

Medically I'm sure his surgeon must be following the op site and its healing, yes?? Is he seeing Radiation Oncology or an Oncologist? Take it one day at a time and do not give up hope.

There are other postings about EC in the Head & neck discussion Boards as well which might be helpful.

    Hi Kelly
I just got to this site and noticed your posting.I had my stomach and part of my esophagus removed about a year ago.I, too dropped about 50 pounds. This surgery is serious, no doubt, and it takes time to recover, but folks do it every day. I found that it helps to just take one day at a time, and eventually you get through it. I remember feeling totally over whelmed by the disease, and not knowing how I would make it through, but one day at a time and you can do it. I know I scared the living daylights out of family and some friends, but here I am, and there are lots more like me. As a care giver you have lots to do, and God bless you. Hang in there, you can do it.

    esoph cancer and support
Thanks for the words of encouragement. My brother is going in on 09/16/08 to have a stent placed, to open up the esoph. This will no doubt save his life as he is loosing weight rapidly and needs to get food down. We pray and surround my brother with love. We figured that the major leakage from the surgery wound from attempt to fix stomach and esoph.(cancer metastisised to liver and surgery didnt happen) wasnt helping as well as not being able to get food down and that is why he lost so much weight (30lb.) in such a short ammount of time (three weeks). I'm posting this imfo. so that maybe it could help someone some day might be dealing with this type of situation. Thank God that no matter what He's promised never to leave us or forsake us. Though we walk through the shadow of death, were pilgrims passing through and he never said we wouldnt suffer. He just said he'd give us a way to bear it. I dont mean to sound preachey. These words I find encouraging
