I am a 28 yr old female who was diagnose this past Oct. with stage 3 melanoma. Lymph nodes in both my left groin and my left pelvic region were taken out. Two nodes in my groin and two in my pelvic tested positive. I am about to start Interferon and it quite honestly scares me. Can anyone tell me what to expect and how I will most likely feel? I know everyone reacts differently....I was just hoping to get an idea.

Thanks,
Heather

I completed interferon treatments about 3 years ago. The basic symptoms will be that of the flu. The first night of my treatment was horrible, my fever was over 104 degrees. I had extreme fever and chills. My body aches were horrible, my hands were numb even my eyeballs hurt. As time progresses the symptoms lessen dramatically. The first month will be pretty bad but just get some extra rest and you should be able to carry on with your daily routine. After the first month your dosage will be cut down so the symptoms are alleviated then as well. I didn't have nausea, I did lose some weight though. One thing I had a real problem with is oral thrush. It is a fungus in your mouth that appears as a white coating inside your mouth and makes things taste different and makes swallowing difficult. Tell your doctor immediately and he/she can prescribe an oral rinse to combat the problem. I needed to take a nap almost daily. Be prepared to say no to doing extra activities. It is a pretty rough treatment but if it will increase your chances of survival it is worth it. I see you are only 28 years old. You are young and should do fine.
I am new to csn but will try to check back and see how you are doing. Good Luck Stell

I DID INTERFREON IN 2000. IT IS NASTY. I WAS 43 AND IN TYPICAL SHAPE. I LOST 58 LBS. I ONLY HANDLED 4 MONTHS OF THE TREATMENT.
DISCOVERED A TUMOR LAST MONTH IN MY NECK. INTERFERON IS NASTY. MELANOMA IS WORSE.
I HOPE YOUR BATTLE IS SUCCESSFUL. MERRAY
