Dear drpoundsign: It's nice of you to recommend a promising study. Some of us might even want to get our butts into a trial, BUT it would be quite beneficial if you included the location of the trial site next time. I've gone to NIH/Medline and cancer.gov to look for a clinical trial w/ these drugs. So far I think DMXAA is dimethylxanthenone acetic acid, BUT I havn't found a correlating clinical trial. If by chance you revisit our site please leave a web address or some lead which will help us find the trial. Thank you, hummingbyrd.

well.... I dont know of a trial. sometimes you have to be like in "Lorenzo's Oil" and brew the stuff up yourself. Don't ask permission to save your life-we docs dont give it. Its murder by depraved indifference that anyone dies of cancer these days

    Dear dr#sign:
Your intuitively right about one thing, it is depraved indifference that kills most cancer patients. The depraved indifference on the part of the treating physicians! And no, for the most part you docs don't give us 'permission' to save our lives. You are much better at attempting to play God and tell us 'how long' we have to live, as if you knew. My days are numbered as are yours, no one knows how long either of us has to live except the LORD, and my diagnosis didn't change my day! You or I either one may get hit by a truck today, or even have a plane fly into our office building for that matter.
As for 'murder' well that comes under the heading of 'lucrative business'.
The 'lucrative business of treating the condition itself.' You know darn well cancer IS curable, they've been working on these antiangiogenic drugs since the '80's. This is big business we are dealing w/ here. This country can't afford to cure cancer. So many are enjoying a piece of the pie no one is willing to give it up. Curing cancer would hit the pockets of numerous pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, research institutions, oncologists, radiation oncologists, (surgeons would be OK they could survive off of gallbladders)! LOL
Our government would lose money from various sources, even the ACS would become obsolete. I have numerous documents on 'promising treatments'. Typically after the promising results are reported the article is followed by the standard '5-10 years of more research, trials and testing before we expect treatment X will hit the market' statement is released.
How beneficial is it of you to recommend the use of a drug that may or may not even be in a clinical trial phase yet? As for 'brewing the stuff up myself', well that suggestion doesn't even deserve a response.
I don't know who you are or what profession you're in, BUT before you start telling me about depraved indifference I suggest you go look in a mirror. It's quite possible that's the first place you'll find 'indifference' or else you would not have so rudely suggested a promising treatment that appears to me to be a 'lost lead'.
Until you've walked the road I've walked, you won't have a clue as to the indifference we recieve sometimes as patients. IF I had not been as involved in my treatment as I have been I would be dead by now. Thank God I have the Greatest Physician of All, and the rest of you are just his associates, because it is by His grace that I am alive today. Through my knowledge of medicine, knowing enough to keep the docs from killing me, my faith in God and his divine intervention is why I'm still alive today.
Now, if you have are interested in helping, if you have any reliable connections, influence and ethical standard, instead of throwing out 2 unknown drugs to us, you'll take those resources do some research and give us some really valuable information.
    Thank you for your time.
By the way, no offense, you've been a perfect sounding board to me for venting my opinion regarding the "cure for cancer" and the blatent opportunistic way this disease is exploited.
Your response insinuating I am indifferent to a life threatening condition was quite humurous, particularly since the life in question is my own!
At any rate I've quite enjoyed writing this rebuttal. My day started out with my feeling a bit fatigued, after Christmas and all. Thanks to you though I'm charged on adrenalin and laughter! Hope this response will have a positive effect on you. God bless, hummb.

    Hummb,

This nut has been around other times before you were a visitor here. He should just be ignored because he always throws out a comment and leaves - a pervert, of sorts, maybe.

now hold on there ladies. Just look up DMXAA and SU11248 in the google search engine. The latter IS found in medline. I found the former while looking up combretastatin phosphate. This is the real deal and I hate to have the Red Army stand with their tanks on the vistula for a year while people burn up at Auschwitz. Conspiracy?? dont think so just chicken "safety studies." But is CHEMO safe and effective?! for an infection we use penicillin not poison. "penicillin" for cancer is the future. food for thought

Much better bedside manner today, many thanks to you dr#, and more importantly a lead I can follow!
I agree with you wholeheartedly, I told them when I took chemo and my wbc went to .5 "kill the cancer, not the host." After that 2nd tx I refused to go back for 8 wks, felt I was offering up my arm for them to 'poisen' me. But Psych MD friend said, "You are committing long term suicide if you don't continue your treatment." You do what you have to do, esp w/ 2 kids and a drug addicted husband.
At any rate I digress, I'm sure you don't have time for my life story. My point is I think you are right, there's a simple cure, undoubtedly one that has no monetary benefits. Did you know Lorenzo's Oil sells for $400 for 6 bottles. Now that's a heck of a price for 6 bottles of olive oil! LOL
Hats off to the perseverence of Lorenzo's parents. Who knows maybe you're the 'Greek MD' that refutes conventional therapy and will point us in the right direction.
I have actually been praying for someone w/ medical expertise, interested in humanity more than the mighty $$$. Thank you for your continuous hard work to release us physically from our diagnostic conditions.
I still have to give honor to God, for it is by faith I am still here. I am spiritually healed and I praise him for sending you my way.
    God bless, hummb

yup, my main woman Susan Sarandon's movie. (crush on Marg Helgenberger too, arrrooooo!) sometimes I think we'd be better off without the drug laws (speaking of your husband.) Betulinic acid from birch bark potentiates platinum chemos. ellegic acid in raspberry seeds perrylil alcohol in sour cherries good. Floxin antibiotics potentiate chemos without additional toxicity to the patient. Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate is a copper chelator which was proven at university of michigan med school to stop the growth of all types of tumors b/c blood vessels dont grow without copper. have to be careful with the dose thought or the anemia will get you. no other side effects. antiangiogenics targeted therapies immunotherapies and smart radiotherapies like boron neutron capture and radioimmunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies. keep the faith.

OK since we seem to be on the same track, may I run a couple of things past you?
If no then stop reading here LOL otherwise here goes:
    Dx 6/00 lumpectomy 4cm tumor w/ 13/27+ lymph nodes, ER+/PR+/mod to strong HER2NU
Tx adriamycin/cyclophosphomide 4 cycles w/ 4 cycles of taxol concommitent w/ tamoxifen had radiation 5/01
Bone met 5/01 (missed by MD, but I like them so no law suit, stupid mistake though, saw it on x-ray and called it a 'bone cyst') rad 8/01
began herceptin 1x/wk (which I asked for from onset of dx, but 'not indicated for prophylactic use' yeah, let's shut the barn door after the horse gets out) sorry, sore spot!
Also got aredia 1x/mo FINALLY got doc to change it to zometa
lumpectomy left breast 8/01 2/2mm spots I opted to radiate anyway
bone met L1-L2 (no right pedicle) rad 10/01
broke thru tamoxifen 8/01 switched to aromasin onc also rec zoladex, I don't think so, call me crazy but I was not to keen on 'tumor flare ups' warning, so I had a hys 10/01.
CEA and CA27.29 been on the rise since Dec 01, so far no source found. Tried xeloda, 2 rounds resulted in grade 2+ hand in foot syndrome, how appropo for me LOL
Took 3 inj of faslodex, markers still rising, they had slowed down on xeloda so I've started back on that at a reduced dose.
DC'ed the faslodex. As you can see
I need help! Any encouraging recommedations would be greatly appreciated! I hope I'm right about you dr#, you seem to be a Godsend.
I'm in relatively good health, all labs normal except for tumor markers. Praise God bone mets do not hurt, never have really, 2 edged sword, but not complaining!
Due for full body CT scans in Jan (been 6 mo), dx w/ sarcoidosis 1/99 so no PET scan. I'd light up like a neon light, have bilat hilar LAD, but no SOB or decrease PFT.
Oh yeah, almost forgot my favorite condition of all, dx w/ parkinson's 8/99 at age of 38.
Now you see why I stand so firmly on faith.
It is being sure of what we hope for and certain of the things we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Any positive suggestions? I hope you are a messenger of substantial proportion, by my faith in God, because I certainly can't see you.
    God bless. hummb

hoo, boy! you been thru the ol ringer! parr for the course. Sometimes its hard to tell what works and what doesnt so they do the "shotgun" approach. BTW, the nutrient lutein reduces breast cancer risk about 90% and I believe would be helpful to those afflicted. steamed Kale is an excellent source. I am a general Internist licensed in several states and doing substitute doc work at present. I believe these boards are where I can really make a difference not renewing blood pressure and cholesterol pills. yuk! will keep in touch. Elliott

Thank you dr#, I'll give the kale a try, can't hurt, unless it tastes as bad as fava beans. LOL I appreciate your input. hummb
