I am looking for anyone who had this procedure several years ago, chose NOT to go through with radiation, and is who is obviously still alive. Did you get cancer somewhere else? did it return to the other side of your neck? Please help. I need to make decision fast. Thanks to all of you who posted yuor experience with radiation here- are any of YOU still alive after 8 years or so?

My first bout of cancer was in 1987. I had part of my tongue removed and a neck dissection. There were no positive nodes so I did not have radiation. It was 13 years before I had a reoccurrence. This time there were positive nodes on the other side and I did have radiation.

ilene- thank you so much for your kind and prompt reply to my posting. I am writing on behalf of my brother who had radiation today. At first I tried to talk him out of it aftr reading the horror stories about after effects. Ultimately I could not dissuade him but now feel he made the right choice, on balance. I must say, going into this site and reading these messages is like opening a door into hell. The patients' agony is clear, and frightening. Your one straight forward reply helped both me and my brother get a little clearer view of this situation, another fact on which to base a decision. You have my very best wishes for an easier time after your treatment, and a long and meaningful life.
