HAVING BEEN TREATED FOR CANCER IN MY LEFT REAL VOCAL CORD WITH 7 WEEKS OF RADIATION, WHICH ENDED IN JULY OF 2001, I CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE MUCUSIN MY THROAT.

THIS DISCOMFORT HAS LED TO MANY SLEEPLESS NIGHTS,DUE TO THE "TICKLE" IT CAUSES IN MY THORAT AS I SLEEP. I ALSO EXPERIENCE SOME VERY GOOD DAYS WITH CLEAR STRONG VOICE AND THEN DAYS OF WEAK AND HORSE. mY MAIN CONCERN IS IS THIS NORMAL...WHICH MY DR'S SAY IT IS . AND HOW LONG WILL THIS LAST? hOW CAN I BE SURE IT IS NOT A RECURRENCE OR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANOTHER CANCER? ANY HELP FROM PERSONS WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU

Strange that you are asking this today. I had my usual check up today with my ENT. Three weeks ago, my voice started to get really raspy. He was concerned, but scoped me in the office to make sure nothing was growing. Anyway, my appointment was with him again today. My voice is raspier than before. I told him that I think I can feel a lump in my neck ( the good side ). Boy did his smile change. He felt it and said it did not feel like a lymph node problem. He then opened my mouth and felt around the bottom of the tongue area and said that my saliva gland is clogged. Keep in mind that I was told this 2 years ago and had cancer the whole time. He knew I was concerned about it. I am back on the heavy antibiotics
once again and he said I have to increase my water and massage the area in my throat area and also to drink sour stuff. If it swells more and does not seem to unclog itself, then he must go in and correct the problem. He also said he would be running MRI tests, cat scans, biopsy, etc..... Just like before. I sure hope nothing is seriously wrong. Now, the strange part. I know that the radiation damaged the glands, and for a long time, I had nothing but foamy spit. That went away about 3 weeks ago about the time my voice started to get raspy. I also noticed that my teeth have become very sensitive. I had to see my dentist about 2 weeks ago and he was so surprise that I had got so sensitive since the last time I saw him which was 4 or 5 weeks ago. The ENT said that the radiated saliva gland will produce a foamy spit and this is normal, however, mine stopped and then clogged. We will see. So, if your voice is getting raspy, you may want to see what is up with it. Visit my website.......Penny Shaver
