I just returned home after attending the Annual Meeting of the Midwest Division of the ACS. It was a wonderful meeting. I am happy to report that a wonderful lady by the name of Mary Koehler announced another large donation to the research of melanoma. I would like to hear from anyone who participates in your local Relay For Life.

I just found this site a few days ago and set up a webpage. I participated in the Relay For Life this year in Kansas City...(Olathe, KS.) It was wonderful. Where was the Annual Meeting you attended? My web page is titled: Dancing Through the Intermissions. I would enjoy hearing form you. Thanks. Linda

I am co-chr of our Relay here in McLeod County Minnesota. It was our 8th Annual. We had 28 teams and raised almost $66,000. Always hoping to raise more next year. The annual meeting I attended was in Bloomington MN.

Because I am new to the area and not yet very involved, I do not know what the teams raised here. My team did bring in the most donations via a silent auction and own sponsorships prior to the night. Where are you in your recovery personally? Have you had any recurrences?
    Nice to connect.
    Thanks.

Glad to hear that the meeting went well. After my husband was diagnosed with melanoma I became a volunteer with the ACS and participated in the Relay for Life event in our area. I wasn't part of a relay team but did take the time to sign up people to the Breast of Friends program and the Advocacy Network. It was a very moving event and the people I met were very friendly and varied. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent and the camaraderie that it engendered.

If you would like to talk further please contact me at the following email address:

All praise to Mary Koehler! We need more like her!

I am curious...how do you ensure her donation goes DIRECTLY for melanoma research? I was frustrated with organizations applying the money to admin & advertising but then applying what's left to other cancers in a hierarchy as they see fit. Very little if any went toward melanoma research. I wanted a method that allowed 100% of the donated money to go directly into melanoma research. So I did it. I began a research fund where 100% of all donations go directly into melanoma vaccine research at KU Medical Center. It is the called the Melanoma Research Fund. If anyone wants to donate...a check would be written out to KUEA (KU Endowment Association) but MAKE SURE that you clearly write "The Melanoma Research Fund" in the memo portion of the check. I am so serious about it that I match every donation given. Good luck all!
