Cancer Spread to Abdominal Lining

in Colorectal Cancer #1

Hello 

       So my dad was told by his new onc that he might have to be on lifelong chemo cause he has foci cells in his abdominal lining . The onc is talking to the tumor board and the surgeon to find out the next steps we will know more in a week . But I did some research online and everything I can find about cancer spreading to the abdominal lining the patient goes right to lifelong chemo it seems . 

       So my question is this are there no other way's to treat cancer that has spread to the abdominal lining ? I asked about radiation was dismissed pretty fast which doesn't make much sense to me . Also what exactly does lifelong chemo mean ? Onc said a few years my dad could be on it but didn't say why he thought only a few years could someone be on chemo longer then that ? 

       Just weird to be that there is hardly any info online about cancer spreading to the abdominal lining and being sucessfully treated . Maybe I just don't want to give up hope but I feel like there must be other options then lifelong chemo thanks for the help ahead of time guys .

    I can't comment on the question you have, hopefully someone knowledgeable can. Just wanted to send my well wishes and say from what I read, second and third opiniona seem very valuabl. Especially if you feel your question about radiation was just dismissed, I would seek a medical opinion as to why.

    The removed Part of My Lining

    When I had my original surgery, the tumor had penetrated into the abdominal lining.

    Some information (note that it can be an original cancer.  Woman get it as a primary cancer more than men.  In terms of Mets, it looks like 7-10% have it secondary from CRC.

    Please don't search on the internet for treatment solutions, survival rates, or stats.  They are not accurate and medicine improves daily with new research coming out all the time with new trials and procedures.  It will drive you crazy thinking about what you read.  It's better to let the doctors tell you what they recommend and how they want to proceed.  If you don't trust them, then you must look for others that you can trust.  Once again, stay off the internet as it's not worth the worry.

    Thanks for this info knew there had to be more ways to treat this and it seems like those options should be considered since my dad only has foci cells .

    I am sorry

    the problem usually is if the surgery can't cure all of the cancer they won't do it. I don't know why but if you have a spread to more than one place they won't do anything but chemo. You can try to get a second option but it's usually the same answer.  Maybe the chemo will help him, you never know. Before my husband's second resection his chemo made his liver tumors 95% necrotic. That was pretty good!

    That is exaclty what I have

    That is exaclty what I have been praying for and how I remain positive I will make it. I am hoping my lung mets have some necrotic cells! And eventually, will all be that way.

    necrotic cells ?

    never heard of this do all cancers have them ?

    I don't know how common it is

    I don't know how common it is but necrotic means dead.

    No

    My husband had a second resection did more chemo and currently has no cancer they can see. however he is having tons of issues with his liver and bile ducts from the hepatic artery infusion pump Sloan put in. Honestly he was healthier with cancer, hard to believe but true.

    If they stop

    Shrinking and don't grow odds are they are necrotic! You will get there I know it!!!!!

    I am sorry to hear that about his liver. I don't think I was a candidate for the pump. Maybe because so much of my liver was taken out during my resection the arteries or whatever weren't there. I had a 2nd opinion with Dr Kemeny, and she never got back to me so I figured that meant I wasn't a candidate. I know she spoke to my oncologist at the time about the treatment plan though for my recurrence, which was what prompted the 2nd opinion. I do hope that they are able to repair any damage to his liver.
