So now I'm on crutches and NWB for the last 2 weeks  I have a titanium knee joint and now they are giving me the option to keep the knee joint and attach it to the rest of my remaining femur (which isn't much) with a compress and screws. I'm still concerned about failure and that the bone won't knit and heal when all the screws are taken out. Additionally they need to custom make an implant to bond the titanium rod to my remaining femur. This is going to take at least 6 more weeks and I'm not happy about that plus recovery time could put me on crutches for 14-18 wks. The other option is the full femur replacement but my orthopedic said I'd have a permanent limp but it wouldn't break and it would be solid.  Can someone elaborate on this for me? Has anyone had this surgery? I'm doing a follow up call next week to discuss the options.

    i have the same situation now. I had six surgeries  and now bone is fractured and the prothesis looses again. My doctor tell me about the total femur raplacement but he tell me that i may have a limitation in flexion and abduction . do You had the surgery ? Please help me If you already had it with some information . Thanks in advance .

    Distal Femur Replacement - Prosthesis

    Hi Scrapgirl106,

    I hope your operation went well. I had my left knee joint & distal Femur resected/replaced back in may of 2014. I had fought a nasty arthritic disease - PVNS - for 25 years, and it destroyed the joint over the journey. My surgeon, implanted an OSS/Compress prosthesis, and I have to say, its been a raging success. I regularly do up to 30k steps per day now, flexibility is almost as good as my right knee, and there's minimal discomfort. I did work hard on the recovery, and indeed put a lot of laps down in a public pool before I had the surgery. Its totally changed my quality of life as I'm now back at least 95% of what I could do in my 30s. Cheers from Adelaide Australia. CoolTongue Out

    Hi. I am 2 weeks post

    Hi. I am 2 weeks post compress device implant. I still have a lot of pain and wondering when I will see improvement in this. What was your experience?

    i just found this site. I'm 58 and had a distal femur replacement and total knee in 1993 for Osteosarcoma. my tumor did not respond to chemo. I have not had a recurrence - knock on wood.  My steel stem broke in 2012 and I had a revision.  I was walking and returned to work in five weeks, however I developed deep bone pain after 3 months and after multiple tests my MD said it was nerve pain. Put me on Neurontin and Vicodin. I took myself off of the Neurontin due to side effects. I just dealt with my pain and when I couldn't walk much jumped on a bike. I use to walk 4 miles a day. So big change in my activity level. My insurance changed so I couldn't go back to my surgeon (which was a blessing). I went to UCLA - Dr. Susan Bukata - and she diagnosed me with Aseptic Osteolysis which cause my endoprosthetic to be loose (my pain). Needed revision again but felt that there wouldn't be enough bone left for a successful revision and opt for total femur replacement. I'm almost 12 weeks out And just got the okay to use a cane but PT guy think I'm too weak for it so I'm using one cane. At home I walk but fatigue easily. I'm taking half a Vicodin tab every four oy five hours. I finally can swim with fins. I can only sleep on my back and my adjustable bed has been a godsend. This is a much bigger surgery and rehab than my previous surgeries but I'm getting stronger. I joke that I am half-assed but I truly am. Someone let the air out of my right cheek. my abductors have atrophied and that isn't just from surgery - it's been going on since my pain started. I'm so glad my insurance was changed because I would have just sucked it up and carried on until I couldn't walk or my leg broke from the osteolysiS because I felt so fortunate to be alive and didn't want to whine about my pain. so that's my story.  if I can answer anyone's questions - feel free to email me.     Total femur replacement, hip and knee

    September 20th, 2017 have this surgery.  Complications removing scar tissue, etc turned the surgery into 10 hours.  I strongly recommend a rehab facility.  I am 62 and just returned home after 17 days.  I am able to use a walker and go up and down the stairs.

    this was third time breaking the same femur so the reason for total femur replacement.  I am lucky that I didn't have a cancer diagnosis so at least that is a good thing.

    still really tired but hopefully no complications in the future!  One thing I have noticed is the leg length discrepancy of about 2 inches.

    i am having pain in my left thigh

    I just got done with neck cancer treatment 3 months ago. Now i have pain in my l thigh, get a PET to follow up on the neck cancer, went to the urgent care clinic with pain and got an xray that showed a mass on my left femur. Thanks everyone that has contributed to this board. Now i know that there are treatments and surgerys for the femur replacement. When i fist got the diagnosis of the neck cancer i thought it wasx a death sentencebut it was not. Now this mass on my l femur. I will just hang in there and do what to the Doctors say is the best treatment. I am in the VA system so a lot of the interns from the University of Mn do the actuall cutting,That is what happened on my neck cancer. I will; question the staff as to who is actually going to do t6he cutting this time.I have my Tricare coverage from the military and i also have medicare but i do not have a suppliment for either one. I would have to pay 20% then at the civilian hospitals. I think i would like to get a 2nd opinion but i do not want to wait to long, i have to get treatment as soon as possible. The VA is free for me . Does anyone know what the reputation fo the minneapolis VA hospital is??     Femur Replacement-renal cell carcinoma

    Hey everyone. I am Kaci, and my mom.has been cancer free for 10 years. All labs, and imaging were negative until a couple weeks ago. She started having pain in her leg and went in and they found a lesion on her distal femur. She went to MD ANDERSON and the oncologist told her that it is metastasis. She goes in to have biopsy this coming Thursday. If metastasis, they will cut out a portion of her femur and replace with a rod. She will also have to have radiation. She has only one kidney, they removed the other 10 years ago when she was diagnosed, then removed 12 nodules in her lungs a few years after, and 8 of them were cancerous. My questions are:

    1. How long is recovery for a partial shaft replacement?

    2. What kind of support and assistive devices will she need at home?

    Have any of you had clear labs for 10 years, and then..bam?
