Why Is The Pain Worse At Night??

in Colorectal Cancer #1

I thought each day would bring less pain with the liver and colon resection but I find some days just bring a new twinge in a different place. I'm walking and moving thru the day as well as resting. It seems severe pain will set in as soon as I try to get into bed. I hate taking the Oxi but a few nights have left me in tears so I took it to sleep. Last night I had pelvic pain and what felt like twinges of strong pain at my rib cage when I got into bed. The heating pad brings some relief. I had planned to head home to the mountains today but instead had to rest from little sleep and fighting pain last night. I just hope I will wake up one morning soon and feel like I have turned the page.  

Onen othe thing on my mind..I was reading thru all of the test results and papework from my sugery. One note said my liver tumors had a poor response to the Folfox and had not shrunk much. My colon tumors responded well. I'm wondering what the purpose of the Folfox will be for my liver if it responded poorly before? I realize it is mop-up chemo but I sure don't want a recurrence in my liver. Hugs, M

    You poor thing

    I remember, not fondly, recovering from surgery. I remember, not fondly, being reprimanded by the surgeon's nurse, because I wanted so bad to feel good too soon.  She had to remind me that I had had major, major surgery.  

    Your surgery was even more major, major than mine, and I have no doubt recovery is going to take a while.  

    My nurse had me visulaize what was done to my body during surgery, and it really helped me realize all of the hidden stuff that has to heal.  I am a very visual person, so I looked good from the outside, surely I was being a whimp. 

    Of course, major pain after surgery is really worrying. If there is anything that you find concerning, and don't think that it is normal post surgrey, don't hesitate to call the nurses.  I probably made a fool of myself a few times, but heck, it calmed my fears and cost only a few mintues. 

    Remember, your beautiful mountain is waiting, and it will be patient, so you be patient as well. 

    I wish I could wave a wand and take all of your pain away.

    I forgot that you had liver surgery as well, I was thinking just the colon ressection. Yikes, that must be rough. Don't push yourself too hard and end up with a set back. I don't know how much pain is typical with that. I didn't find that the pain was worse at night but I did find that lying down was uncomfortable. I know that it's best to lie on your left side for the liver and things like that to be more comfortable and in the right spots but I prefer to lie on my right side. And struggling to switch was pretty awkward and hurt. And took about ten minutes.

    I hope you'll feel much better very soon!

    Slowly but Surely..

    Thank you for the note. I wondered at first if I should have done the surgeries one at a time but I'm glad they are both done and over. It left me not being able to lay on either side for a while but now I am able to use pillows for support and alternate to the colon side for a change. The liver side is still doing its' own  pain routine. I never know when it will attack..lol..I drove to my mountains today. My son-in-law loaded my car last night and I took my time and drove in to my mountain place today. My other daughter who lives here came and unpacked for me. She also went and got dinner and two pieces of chocolate cake to celebrate my birthday. I am in heaven..getting to my mountains was my the best celebration ever. I know I will recover much better and faster here. Huge hug your way for the sweetness you shower to each and all...hugs, M

    Doing both surgeries was rough but I have it behind me now. I am getting stronger every day and the pain level is changing..taking it one day at a time. I drove up to my mountain place today. It was my birthday and I was determined to celebrate it here. My kids packed and unpacked my car for me. I think I will sleep much better in my own bed tonigh..lol ...regardless how I have to prop up or lay. Hope you are getting stronger ever day..sure sounds like you are.     There is nothing like being home to make you feel more comfortable.  I am glad you are back in the mountains, which I am sure will help with your recovery.

    Hello Mojo sorry you are in so much pain! Maybe its the effect of gravity all day long, maybe its nerve endings waking up--they do have to push other organs out of the way and positon your body during surgery in extreme positions--maybe its the residual of that as well.  I read the surgical report of my colon surgery and they practically stood me on my head to get some of the tumor out. Happy happpy birthday and enjoy your beloved surroundings!

    Happy birthday! Mine's coming up soon, too. Last year my husband got me a new dog for my birthday. I don't think I'll get anything as wonderful this year. He's a rescue- the dog- and came from California. He's 8 or 9 years old. He's a cocker spaniel and he's a doll, I just LOVE him! And he gets along with the other two dogs we already have and the cat, too. 

    Anyway, I hope you had a good day and I'm glad to hear that you're getting around. You're a tough cookie!

    Surgery

    You just had major surgery and your whole insides have been moved, worked on, taken out in parts and reworked, etc.  You should definitely not be sleeping well yet.  You have been through so much and still it sounds like you are getting up and trying to walk about and do some things.  Don't think that you are going to heal in a week or two, it doesn't work that way.  Take a deep breath and realize what you have been through.  You deserve a good night's sleep, pain free, but it's going to take a little while longer.  Hoping you feel better soon.

    Not sure if you know this, but you should be using your arms and not your abs to get out of bed, get up from chair, all that.
