Long But Good Day at MUSC-It's About To Get REAL

in Colorectal Cancer #1

Just an update..I had the colonoscopy today at MUSC and the colon surgeon said he would do the surgery laproscopically at the same time as the liver resection. He was able to get the scope past the tumor and examine the colon since the tumor had shrunk. He aslo said the tumor was higher up and not rectal which was a good thing. Based on what he saw, he said he doesn't think I will have an ostomy unless there is some unforseen complication witht the liver resection. I am relieved that I will be having both done in one surgery but still afraid of how hard the recovery might be. I think I feel much better about doing mopup chemo with both surgeries finished instead of spreading it so far out and apart. I did ask about the epidural and told that would be used for pain management. I have been blessed in so many ways since this journey started for me. This board has been such a wonderful place to vent, laugh, and ask any and everything from people on the same train. I just want to give a sincere "thank you" to each and every one of you. I won't ramble on. I much prefer to take advantage of the drugs still in my system from the colonoscopy and get a good night of sleep. Most of last night was spent in the bathroom due to the colon prep, lol. Wishing everbybod a good weekend!!..Hugs, M

    I hope you sleep like a baby image...... wait, silly saying, because babies don't sleep thruogh the night. So, I hope you sleep like a log......wait, do logs sleep? 

    OK, I hope you sleep soundly image and wake up refreshed and happy  image. 

    It is good news, knowing tumours have shrunk, and surgeries can be combined.  

    My advice, for what its worth, don't (try not to) worry about recovery, and prepare your body and mind for the surgery part. Tell yourself that you WILL recover well, and then wait to see how it goes. 

    I lost your PM due to the site crash, and would love another one.  And please add your beautiful picture/avatar again, as that has disappeared with the crash.

    Yup the prep can do that to you so hope you get a great nights sleep.  Glad they can do it all at once and you might not need the ostomy.  Praying for a good outcome on the surgery to come and it's a complete success.  I'm happy that you can find comfort and answers on this board.  We have a wealth of information between all of us.  Always remember that we are just a question and post away if you need comfort, answers, or just to vent.  Our ears and eyes never close to anyone.

    Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed..lol

    Sweet "True"...every faithful and uplifting you are..thank you! I slept well and feel so much better with a plan in place. I'm anxious about all of it but I've lost enough to this nasty disease. I'm in fight mode. I will spend the time before surgery getting in as best shape as possibe for what is to come. I replaced my pic with one that was taken last week while I was in the mountains...happy girl!! I am headed back to the mountains this week to work on the little place I bought. I intend to soak up as much "life" as I can before I go under the knife, lol. Hoping your weekend is off to a beautiful start. Stay warm!! Hugs your way, M

    You are absolutely right. I do feel better with a "plan". I crashed last night and I'm still in PJ's this morning, lol. Great pic you put up!! I'm still anxious about all of it but it seems to be the best road to take to maybe lead me to the light at the end of the tunnel with all of this. Wishes for a great weekend!!...hugs, M

    The same

    I had close to the same surgery that you are facing.   In spring of 2017, after receiving 3 rounds of intense chemo to shrink the tumor,  i had a liver abalation and a partial liver resection ( lesions were on opposite sides of the liver) And LAR via robotic surgery done on the same day, same operative setting. Liver guy did his part first, colon surgery was last.  Like you, my tumor was high enough that i did not require an ileostomy or colostomy.   I did 5 rounds of chemo in the months following the surgery  

    Its a major surgery so recovery takes time and effort.  The first 2 days post op were rough, but once the IVs and catheter were out and it was easier to be mobile things improved greatly.  I was in the hospital for three days and once i was home controlled my pain with Tylenol ( the stronger pain meds, just made my stomach hurt like h.ll.).  

    in the meantime before your surgery do everything you can to make your body strong. Good food, exercise, fresh air....whatever works for you.  i found meditatin and visuslization to be helpful for easing my pain and sleeping well.

    Heading To The Mountains Tomorrow

    Thank you! I have been blessed by the grace of God thru this. I realize things could go much differently and I look forward to getting the surgery behind me and hitting the "healing" path asap. Looks like somebody else enjoys the mountains as much as I do...Hugs, M

    Fantastic they can do both ops at once laproscopically ,that must mean a easier healing time. Hope you enjoyed your sleep, if you have to have a colonoscopy at least they give you good drugs rightCool.  (silver linings & all that). Enjoy your mountains. plus love your new photo.     Mountains

    Actually, all of my profile photos are from Grand Canyon hikes (my little obsession) which is kind of a reverse mountain (one mile altitdue change from the rim to the river).  Hopefully the weather has turned warm there in the East.

    One Day I Will See The Grand Canyon

    It is on my list.  Glad you have an obsession that you find joy and contentment with. It sure helps to get lost in something and not dwell on cancer related issues.     Thank you for the "vibes"!

    I will take all the "healing" vibes I can get, lol. The liver resection will be an open surgery but the colon resection will blaproscopic. Hoping I have no set backs with the liver resection and they can safely finish both. I would love to feel beach sand between my toes but it will be a while before I can make that trip.     Perceptive

    I hiked the Canyon at the end of every off week during chemo.  With the physical exertion and attention to footing (and views), it was the only time I did not think about cancer.  It provided some much needed emotional relief.  I also think the long hikes help to fight cancer.
