Infected infusaport

Hello has anyone experienced an infected infusaport? I had my port placed May 7, first chemo was May 15, all went wel till this past weekend hte site became very red and inflamed with some drainage from the top of the port. I went for my pre-chemo blood work and was promptly whisked to Interventional Radiology for evaluation, they felt it was infected and needed to come out which they did. Now on P.O. antibiotics but not sure when I should get a new one placed..I am having a lot of side effects from the Avastin, BP is high (130-140/95-100), my mouth is sore and lips are completley blistered up, constant sinus drainage, skin is blistered up and on and on. Do you think it is unwise to skip a week or two of chemo and let things heal up? Will talk to oncologist tomorow but wondered what people here think. The thought of chemo free for 2 weeks sounds like heaven lol.

    Wow

I'm not able to give you any advice as my port never got infected, but there are others on this board that this has happened to.  It's good that you are going to your oncologist tomorrow to discuss this with them.  It's important that you don't let this infection go.  Let us know how it goes tomorrow and wishing you well.  Your doctor will determine if you need to stop treatment in order to get this infection under control.

Hi Kim, thank you for the kind thoughts. I had the port removed and will get a new one next week. So I am getting an extra chemo free week this week which makes me very happy lol

    Great

So glad that you had the port removed.  This should heal up now that the "infection" portion is removed.  Hopefully this new one will not give you such a bad reaction.  My treatment had to be delayed several times due to low counts.  It's frustrating but necessary.  Let us know how the new insertion goes.  Wishing you the best of luck.
