Blood in urine

I am trying not to worry but my husband became really ill about 2 weeks ago. We thought it was the flu- fever, cold, enlarged lymph nodes and at the same time had quite a bit of blood in his urine. (may have nothing to do with each other but happened at the same time) He does not have a UTI, blood work all looks good but he continued to have blood in his urine. Visit to urologist and he did a scope and said the bladder looked good, does have enlarged prostate and he ordered a CT scan of kidneys and mentioned possible tumor(scheduled for this Wed). Over the weekend he had severve lower back pain, mostly on the L. He said it is a pulled muscle. He is 62 and otherwise in good health. My question is, since his kidney functions came back within the norm could I safely assume it isnt cancer. I keep telling myself to breathe and take it one step at a time. I probably have a little PTSD from my breast cancer last year ( I am aok now!) but any guidance would be appreciated.

    Rw,

    The CT scan will tell if it appears malignant. Even if malignant many of us still have a full recovery. Mine was almost 16 years ago. The URO is on the ball ruling out bladder cancer and ordering a CT to check the Kidneys on the first visit.

    Thank you for your reply. i know I just need to calm down and take it one step at a time. Both of us really like the urologist so that is a good first step.

    It's possible that it's a kidney stone which could cause pain and blood in urine. I hope the CT scan will show that. And if it is a tumor hopefully it was caught early and surgery will take care of it. Wishing you both the best!

    They did an xray at first and said they did not see any stones. Today he is feeling much better and urine looks clear. Hopefully this was just some weird fluke. I will update after the CT. Thank you for you support>

    Make sure they do the CT scan WITH CONTRAST (dye).

    Make sure they do the CT scan WITH CONTRAST (dye).   The dye will pick up any tumors.

    If you just have the CT scan without the dye.  That test only will show kidney stones but will **NOT** show tumors.

    This happened to my husband.  He first had the CT scan without the dye and they didn't see anything and just sent him home.  They said oh the blood in the urine was probably from a past kidney stone and you got tore up inside and it will take 8 weeks for the blood to stop being visible in your urine.

    Well, they were wrong and as time went on, we knew they were wrong.  We went to a different facility and that doctor ordered a CT scan WITH DYE and that is how he was diagnosed.  They saw the tumor.

    If we listened to the other place, he would have died.

    The first place did say they just assumed it was a kidney stone and that is why they ordered the CT scan without the dye and didn't see anything.  Only the dye will pick up a mass.

    Oh My! So glad you went to a different facility. His is going to be with dye. They did kidney function test first. That is a question I had. If you have a tumor on your kidney, wouldn't your kidney functions be abnormal? Anyway, he has it tomorrow with dye and hopefully we do not have to wait long for results

    The best answer I can give to your question from my observations is sometimes and not necessarily. Also normal and not normal functions are relative terms. Generally you lose a degree of kidney function after you lose a kidney although some start out with lower kidney function as a result of the tumor. Your bloodwork has to be at a certain level otherwise the dye can be harmful to your kidney. From having had many CT's they require current bloodwork before you get the dye like at the same time or within 48 hours.  Your URO is on top of this so don't worry about the dye  and do not assume that whether your kidney function is normal or not corresponds to whether you have a tumor or not. Most people with kidney disease (abnormally low kidney function) have it for reasons other than a kidney tumor.
