Surgery yesterday, discharged today :)

in Kidney Cancer #1

I can't begin to thank you all for you sweet comments and support.  Reading all of your stories was so inspiring to me.  I had surgery yesterday at 12 and they were able to save 95% of the kidney.  I was originally suppose to stay 2 nights, but was pleasantly surprised I just got released.  They removed drain and catheter and I was peeinh on my own.  I was poked fOr blood what seems like 100 times.   Now headed home to drink water, walk and rest.  Any other tips you may have for me? Thanks for any advice.  Y'all are such an amazing group!  And you were all right!  The waiting for this surgery was way worse than anything else.

    Get thru that first week

    Spivey,

    Those first few dayscan be a little rough especially when nthe meds ware off. Hopefully you are past that point.

    Don't over do it

    If you do, you'll pay the price.  When they say no lifting, twisting or bending, they mean it.  I was 2 weeks out, feeling really good, did some laundry (front loaders at the time).  That night I felt like I was going to pass out from the intense, extreme pain......which I never had after the surgery.  Ended up in the ER.  Just over did it.  My body was rebeling.

    Let Your Body Tell You

    Yesterday was ten days post-op for me.  The advice my surgeon gave me was very good advice.  Let your body tell you what you can and can't do.  Walking hasn't been a problem for me.  But that's been about the extent of my physica acticity, other than picking up after the dog.  Luckily, he's a small little guy, so he doesn't get up to th 10 pound limit.  But anything twisting and turning puts too much of a strain on my sutures.  Driving, however, seems to be ok.

    But take it slow and listen to your body.

    I think I am having gas pain...is this normal?

    i think most of the pain I am experiencing is gas?  even up to my left should bladde hurts.  Does this sound normal?

    And yes And yes! It took a few days before that pain went away.  My gas pain was quite unpleasant.  

    The CO2 can irritate the peritoneum.  The CO2 can settle up under the diaphragm.  The diaphragm has a large nerve connected to it called the vagus nerve.  That never can cause pain to radiate up into your shoulders.  Really the only thing you can do is walk more and take your pain meds.  It should resolve in a few days.

    Yay, so glad it's behind you and you're home. Taking it easy is excellent advice. Don't rush things and hope the gas pains go away soon. Yes, they're normal, especially with lap surgery.

    Low grade fever normal?

    is a low grade fever normal after surgery?  It hasn't gotten over 100, it's gotten to 99.8.  Should I be concerned?

    Check with doctor. They may want to do blod work to rule out infection.

    Gas

    The shoulder pain is perfectly normal.  I felt like I had pitched a full nine inning baseball game after my surgery.  Agree on the temp.  Check with the doctor, just to be sure.

    Fever

    I also had a fever  and it got to 100.8   someone here said to push lots of water. I drank lots and  my fever dropped.  try to drink as much as you can.  Hope it helps you too.

    Make sure you do your breathing excersizes.

    That pain...

    When I had laparoscopic surgery before (not for kindney), the pain from the residual CO2 was probably the most aggrevating part post-surgery.  At least the other pain was decent enough to be related to where I'd had surgery, but the CO2 left-overs' was referred pain -- meaning, someplace other than where it was "supposed to be." I must say, I pretty much lost my respect for carbon dioxide at that point Frown .

    So, yes, normal, and in places you totally weren't expecting it. 

    It'll pass... Wink .

    Drink more water & make sure

    you use that Incentive Spirometer (deep breathing).  Usually, the low grade fever has to do with not drinking enough after surgery, but it can also be a bit of pneumonia setting in if you're not doing enough deep breathing.

    Hopefully, you just need a bit more water.
